Dr DeMaio was my faculty advisor, my friend , my inspiration. I enrolled in the Graduate program in Nursing for my degree in Parent Child Nursing in 1978 0r !979. ( I forget). In the middle of finishing my thesis I moved to California. I was struggling, not getting anywhere fast. She informed me that she was coming to California for a conference and would be coming to my home to help me.She did , I completed my thesis and because of her I graduated in 1983. I still think of her with fond memories.. There are too few like her. I feel privileged to have known her. She heped me to have confidence in myself. I will never forget her. Thankyou.

Dean Dorothy J. DeMaio, was my hero. She was everything that I wanted to be. Dean DeMaio came into my life August 1990. That was when I started working for the College of Nursing. She was the grandest person that I had ever met. She made me who I am today. She taught me how to professional, classy and how to stand up for what is right. She was a great mentor. She stood for education. And she made sure that I went back to school and stayed there until I had earned my degree. Whenever, we spoke she would ask "Devon how is school coming along", I was always proud to answer her that I was doing well. She meant so much to me. I truly loved her and Maureen. Dean DeMaio used to have a crystal number on her desk and I always admired it. She said to me one day as I was admiring it that I was number one. I never forgot that. When I graduated from Rutgers University, she me a gift to my party by Maureen. When I opened it I was so surprised. I cried because she had given me a crystal number one identical to hers. Needless to say that I am at loss right now. I feel like a part of my world has been shattered. However, I must go on. I hear Dean DeMaio saying to me "Devon you are a strong, smart woman you must and you can go on". She has definitely been the wind beneath my wings for many years and she will continue to be. Family please remember that she was loved by many. She was loved for her leadership, intelligence, and her strong will and dedication to the College of Nursing. And know that we will continue to bless and honor her memory. She was known as the Grand Dame, and grand she was. So, can I say that the Grand Dame has left the house but not for long. Rest Dean DeMaio for you deserve it. Condolences to the family and may you all be blessed.

Dorothy’s family: I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through a similar situation and I was very helped by the hope that I found in the Bible in John 5:28, which says, "Do not amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I am sending you a link with more information on this hope.

One of the joys of being Dean and then Provost at Rutgers-Newark was working with Dorothy as colleague and collaborator over two decades. Others have described the important things she accomplished as Dean, but we should also remember that she was an early and fierce defender of women's rights - and of Nursing as a primarily women's profession. She was a skillful political infighter but always eased the atmosphere with Irish humor, and stories about the cruises she and Larry took, about her family (she'd try to soften me up by telling me about her smart Jewish grandchildren while I countered by boasting about my Irish daughter in law), she remembered birthdays and holidays, and for years would convene our group of deans for a fancy annual dinner and lots of laughter. She was a Presence. I miss her deeply.

To all of the DeMaio family,
My deepest sympathy to you in the loss of your mother and grandmother. I do not need to tell you how magnificent a human being she was. I first met her 50 years ago and she became a long-time friend, role model and mentor. She gave much to so many and she was a leader of our profession. It was a privilege to work closely with her on legislation to define nursing during the early 70's. We have all lost a treasured, loving person. May she rest in peace.

I met Dorothy in 1970 when she joined the pediatric nursing faculty and I was an undergraduate nursing student. During many informal conversations Dorothy taught us about political maneuverings with the emerging nurse practitioner movement and the lighter side to the women's liberation movement: "I'd burn my bra," she said," If I could go without it." Her sense of humor never left her. Through the 1970s we met at the Annual Spring luncheon for CN alumna. In 1981 I joined the Rutgers faculty and Dorothy was my Dean. We had our disagreements over the years but even if I lost a fight, I knew Dorothy always, always put the College of Nursing first. Just ask retired Provost Norman Samuels. Dorothy was wonderful leader and friend. I will miss her. My sympathies to all the DeMaios.

Dear Dorothy was my Dean at Rutgers College of Nursing when I was an undergraduate student, while Maureen was my professor. Fast forward 15 years and I had the pleasure of teaching at Rutgers with beloved Maureen and had the honor of calling both of them my friend. Dorothy was an amazing nurse and an even more wonderful person who will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences. I will treasure the memories.
