Obituary of William Halsey

William G. Halsey IV died Tuesday, August 23, 2011, after a long battle with cancer. He was 62 years old. Born August 13, 1949, in Plainfield, NJ, William (Bill) grew up in Basking Ridge. He attended Morristown Baird School and graduated from Ridge High School in 1969. He attended Keystone College before beginning his career as a skilled carpenter and general contractor. Bill was a former member of the Bedminster/Far Hills First Aid Squad and the Summit Elks Club. He moved to Colorado in the 1970's and later lived briefly in California. In 1994, he returned to Basking Ridge, where he continued in the construction business. Bill enjoyed playing golf, sailing, and spending time with his friends and family. He traveled to many places, including Greece, Mexico, and throughout the Caribbean. He particularly enjoyed working as a member of the Bernardsville Memorial Day Parade committee. Bill will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his parents, Christina C. Halsey and William G. Halsey III of Basking Ridge; four sisters, Christina Way (Robert) of Montclair, NJ; Ann Halsey of Downingtown, PA; Jeannie Groat (Stephen) of Aiken, SC; Betsy Wallace (Jim) of Millington, NJ; a brother James K. Halsey (Joyce Russell) of Bernardsville, NJ; 10 nieces and nephews, and eight great nieces and nephews, by whom he was much loved as "Uncle Bill." A memorial service and celebration of Bill's life will be held on Sept. 10, 2011, at 3 p.m. at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, with a reception following the service at his parents' home in Basking Ridge.
