I am just now finding out about Dr. Polonko’s death and am deeply saddened by it. She taught me at ODU in the 1980’s and had a tremendous impact on me both academically and personally. I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to know her. She was such an incredible woman! I will truly miss her. Although late, I send my condolences to her family.

You made a tremendous difference in my life. You always said, "You don't have to do something big to change the world, sometimes it could be just making a difference in the lives of one or two people". You taught me that "It is never ok to hit a child."
Dr. Polonko you will be missed!!!

Karen was my teacher in the mid-80's. She helped ignite many of my passions and activism on behalf of battered women and their children. I still continue my work today with the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Karen demanded excellence and helped me develop my critical analysis and writing skills. I am honored to have been her student. I send heart-filled wishes for peace and comfort. Karen will be deeply missed by so many of us! She helped repair the world.

I am just learning of Dr. Polonko's passing and am deeply saddened. I was a student of hers in two classes at ODU between 2004-08. I was also a board member of ISOC (which I continue to talk about today). She is the most influential teacher I have ever had. I am grateful to have met her, to have been her student, to have participated in and planned with her the fairs, community events, and vigils. I never learned so much as I did when I was her student. I continuously sought her counsel and in the recent years tried my best to get in contact with her. On my last visit to ODU I made it a point to go up to her office and just seeing her name was admirable. Her passion for the lives of children ignited a light inside of me. I loved her collaboration with Dr. Lombardo. I am forever changed. If the family reads this, please know that she spoke of you with so much love, especially of her niece Sasha. I am so sorry for your loss. As I start my first year of teaching high school in special education I will remember fondly the memories and teachings of Dr. Polonko. I kept all of my notes from your classes. Thank you for teaching me to always have a child centered perspective! Hugs and love to you, may you rest in peace from all of your hard work to better the lives of others - Andria Marshall (Falls Church, VA)

Dr. Polonko was one of my professors when I attended ODU as an undergraduate student studying Criminal Justice. She was the reason I got involved with In Support of Children and I learned an extraordinary amount from Dr. Polonko. She was a very knowledgeable and demanding professor and I always looked forward to her classes. I am now a teacher, and she is one of the biggest influences of my teaching style in the classroom. She will be deeply missed and Old Dominion University has suffered a great loss in the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department.

Dr. Polonko was my professor at ODU back in 2005. She was amazing and my favorite professor by far. I still even have all of my notes and handouts from her courses. Because of her, I have been working with victims of child abuse over the past ten years. She's truly an inspiration and will be greatly missed. Rebecca Cowan (McBride)

Karen lived her life fighting for the rights of the vulnerable. She and the children who went before her must be having a blast where they are; and those she left behind will live to remember her huge heart, and all the things she did to better their lives. Her steadfastness in the things and people she believed in was a rare and striking trait. I will miss her profoundly. Until we meet in eternity, go well my friend.

I want to extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of Dr. Polonko. I was a student of hers at ODU in '92-93 and a member of In Support of Children. Dr. Polonko made me challenge what I had been taught. In retrospect, she is the first true child advocate I'd ever met...and her passion ignited a fire in me to also advocate for children. I've worked in Child Protective Services in Virginia Beach for almost 2 decades. Along the way, I know I have helped improve and even save lives. Dr. Polonko helped shape my destiny and I'm forever grateful.
