Obituary of Richard H. Herold

Richard H. Herold, 80, died at Morristown Memorial Hospital on Sept. 21, 2010. Born in 1930 in Newark, NJ, he was the son of Harvey T. and Effie Herman Herold. He was a graduate of the Pingry School, Franklin and Marshall College, and Yale Law School. Between college and law school he served in the U.S. Navy, rose to the rank of Lieutenant, was a deep sea diver, and saw combat action in Korea. In 1962, he married Barbara DeGray. They settled in Bernardsville. Mr. Herold joined Wharton, Stewart & Davis in 1957 and was a founder of the current Herold Law, P.A. in 1980. He specialized in trust and estate planning and administration. He was a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel since 1978, and lectured widely to both lay and professional groups. Mr. Herold's professional and community activities were numerous, including serving as Vice Chair of the New Jersey Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on Professional Ethics, Chair of the Gubernatorial Commission on Values Education, Chair of the Somerset County Ethics Committee, Chair of the Somerset County Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee, President of the Somerset County Legal Aid Society, Trustee of the Morristown Memorial Health Foundation, Trustee of the Princeton Foundation for Biologic Medicine, Director of First National Bank of Central Jersey, Director of Somerset Trust Company, Director of Ultra Bancorporation, and Trustee, former President, and Trustee Emeritus of the Bonnie Brae Educational Center. He was an active member of St. John on the Mountain and a volunteer at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was a long-time member and Board member, including a term as President, at the Somerset Lake & Game Club. Richard was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather and took an enormous pride in his family. He enjoyed fishing, tennis, reading and writing. He is survived by his wife Barbara D. Herold of 48 years, daughter Jennifer and husband Erwin Mayer of Winnetka, IL, sons, Richard, Jr. and wife Rachel Herold of Paradise Valley, AZ, and Gordon of Kauai, HI. He is also survived by five grandchildren, William Herold, Emma Herold, Christopher Mayer, Matthew Mayer, Timothy Mayer, and one brother, Ted Herold. A Memorial Service will be held on Sat. Sept. 25, 2010 at 11:00am at St. John on the Mountain, 379 Mt. Harmony Road, Bernardsville, NJ.
