We led a trip to Taos, New Mexico in 2010. Edward was a participant. Intelligent and kind with a wonderful sense of irony, he will be missed.

As one of those who knew " Brophy" longest , I can say I think he would appreciate this an appropriate epitaph . The words are by Dylan Thomas.
Do not go gentle into that good night
Old age should burn and rave at close of day
Rage rage against the dying of the light

Dear Family and close friends of Edward,
I am so sorry to hear of us losing Edward. I used to work as the staff director of the Rockland Co. EMC (Environmental Mgmt. Council), which Edward joined back in 2008. He will be greatly missed around the EMC table. Edward preferred that we call him Edward, not Ed, which he told us about 3 years into being a member of the EMC and we all had been calling him Ed. This made us laugh and we were happy to call him Edward, moving forward.
He was a passionate environmental activist and artist. His perspective and thoughtful questions were always unique and important. I will really miss him. He was a true gem. I am so sorry for your loss. Mary Hegarty

Bward (my name for Buddy and Edward) was a true bard. His handwritten letters to me were lengthy and scintillating. He loved words. He loved movement. He sang our family and his sister and other dear friends thru the snowy covered fields of New Hampshire as we cross country skied. He rode his bike with me on the bike trails of Cape Cod and walked the frozen beaches on wintry evenings. He made every occasion memorable. O, how we loved you, dear dear friend.

It is with a very heavy heart that I send my condolences to the Brophy family. I have only known Ed for a year or two through my work as staff assistant for the Rockland County Environmental Management Council (EMC). He was a dedicated member and lively individual, full of charisma and adventure. He always made us laugh and enlightened us with his art. The EMC and I will miss his youthful energy.
The EMC is very saddened by this loss and would like to honor him and his family for his dedication to the environment.
Sincerely,
Nicole Laible

To Ed's Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Ed was a unique man and a friend. I knew him from hiking with him with the Adirondack Club. I wrote this for our monthly newsletter and our club president suggested I send it on to you.
Although the phrase, "They don't make 'em like that anymore," is overused these days, in the case of Ed Brophy, it was entirely true. Brought up in the rough and tumble streets of New York in the 1940s, he joined the police force not so much for the salary or the uniform, but because, he once told me, "Those SOBs were tougher than anyone else on the streets. I wanted to be just as tough as they were." But beneath that rough, intimidating exterior was a man who was also endlessly curious, spirited and creative. Many of us remember his music nights when he would play the guitar or encourage others to play their instruments and sing. Several of his energetic and skillful paintings grace the main cabin of our club. Moreover, he loved a good joke whether it was clean or otherwise, and he laughed freely and often. I will miss his hearty laughter and his mischievous grin.

I am the chairperson of the Singles and Sociables activity committee of the Appalachian Mountain Club where Ed frequently attended our hikes. I admired Ed for his multiple
talents and his wonderful energy. He was a welcome addition to our hikes and we
had many stimulating conversations and discussions. I am shocked and very saddened by his passing and I speak for many many hikers when I say that he will be sorely
missed. Ed was a true individual who spoke his mind and stood behind his principles.
A renaissance man.......rest in peace, Ed.

So very sorry to hear about Eddie's passing, God rest his soul. I worked with Eddie in the 47 precinct in the Bronx in the 1970's. I live in Congers also and we used to commute together. I used to see him all the time riding his bike and walking in Rockland Lake and Congers Lake. I am so sorry that this tragedy happened to him. So very sad. What a loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all the family.
Love, Harry and Carol O'Boyle
