Obituary of Dr. Jerry J Aquino

Dr. Jerry Joseph Aquino, MD of New Vernon, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 4th, at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Friday, January 9th, at Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, N.J. from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Christ the King, Blue Mill Road, New Vernon, N.J. on Saturday, January 10, 2015, 10:30 a.m. Internment will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 225 Ridgedale Avenue, East Hanover, N.J. Born and raised in Jersey City, Dr. Aquino lived in Berkeley Heights before moving to New Vernon in 1990. He graduated from Saint Peter's Prep in Jersey City, and earned a Bachelor of Science Cum Laude degree from Saint Peter's College in 1970. Dr. Aquino received his medical degree with honors from Temple University School of Medicine in 1974. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Aquino completed his residency program at Overlook Hospital where he served as chief resident in Family Practice. In addition, Dr. Aquino also received a degree from Columbia University as a visiting Clinical Fellow. Shortly after completing his residency in 1977, Dr. Aquino opened his practice in Berkeley Heights. He dedicated the last 40 years of his life to medicine, building a practice and becoming a well-known family physician within the community. In 1996, Dr. Aquino joined Medical Diagnostic Associates, a multi-specialty group of physicians in northern and central New Jersey. Dr. Aquino was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians as well as a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice. Dr. Aquino was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 40 years, Carol (nee Di Salvo). He was a loving and dedicated father to his two children, his daughter, Jennifer and her husband Adam Slater, and his son, Michael. He is also survived by his parents, Joseph and Mildred Aquino; and his sister, Lucy and her husband, Robert Fern. Dr. Aquino enjoyed spending summers at the Jersey Shore at his home in Chadwick Beach Island, as well as reading, gardening and biking. He also enjoyed engaging with his patients, who had all become an integral part of his life over the last 40 years. Most of all, his first love was spending time with his wife and two children. He was so incredibly proud of his son and daughter and was looking forward to celebrating the birth of his first grandchild in February. Dr. Aquino will always be remembered for his warm smile and willingness to help anyone who needed him. He was loved by his family and friends as well as the patients he cared for so diligently. Dr. Aquino was particularly dedicated to the care of families and children.
