Obituary of Norbert Schindler

NORBERT SCHINDLER 72, Bernardsville Resident, Former Computer Administrator Norbert Schindler, 72, of Bernardsville, died Monday, July 21 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was born in Schoenau in southeastern Germany on May 22, 1942. He grew up in Stuttgart and was a proud Swabian. He came to the United States in 1972 to study computer science at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He spent his entire career as a computer administrator initially at Siemens in Iselin, New Jersey and then for many years at Mercedes in Montvale, New Jersey. He moved to Bernardsville in 1976. He was a great story teller, domestic and international traveler, avid skier, devoted member of the Basking Ridge Methodist Church choir, active member of the Somerset Hills YMCA, and an accomplished accordion player. He performed regularly for the senior citizens at the Basking Ridge Y, and he recently was the keynote performer at an International Friendship Club dinner in Caldwell and Juniper Village in Chatham. He was a loving and generous father to Nellie and Daniel, and often took trips with them to Europe, New England, and other locations. He was a big supporter of Daniel's soccer career, attending Bernards High games and driving him to travel games and tournaments both inside and outside New Jersey. He is survived by his daughter Nellie, a junior at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, and his son, Daniel, a junior at Bernards High School; their mother, Anja; his four brothers and their wives in Germany, Kurt and Gerlinde, Franz and Monica, Herbert and Doris, and Ernst; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Kerstin White of Convent Station and their children, Janine, Lisa, and Eric; and several nieces and nephews in Germany. A memorial service will take place at the Basking Ridge United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 7 at 6:00 PM.
