I worked with Sam in the Instructional Resources Center in the early 1980's. I'd known him since the 1960's. He was a very special person in my life and it was a privilege to have known him. Our school district and community was very fortunate to have had such a knowledgeable and caring individual.

In my fifty years working in public education, I admired those colleagues who made the schools go. Sam Defino was one of the most caring and capable public servants I have ever known, as well as a dear friend. I admired him for his self sufficiency, the high quality of his work and the sense that he was part of a family which had a common purpose to serve the children of South Orange and Maplewood, nine of which were his own! He built his own house for them and Dolores and instilled in those children a sense of love and discipline that produced a fine group of adults and a multitude of wonderful grand children. I will miss him.
