Alice Wise

Obituary of Alice W Wise

Alice Walker Wise of Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge, NJ, died at home Sunday, September 1, at the age of 87. She had lived at Fellowship Village since 2003, where she and her husband of 50 years, Lloyd Wise, Jr., moved after 42 years in Chatham. A graduate of Smith College, she worked in publishing in New York from 1947 until 1953, first at McCall’s Magazine and then as radio/TV editor of Tide Magazine, a weekly newsmagazine of the advertising business. While in Chatham, married and with three children, she volunteered at the local public schools, the League of Women Voters, St. Paul’s Church, the Smith College Club of Watchung Hills, the Summit Art Center, and Overlook Hospital. She was an Overlook volunteer for more than 30 years. She was also active for many years in Interweave, a center for holistic living in Summit, run at the time by an Episcopal priest of the Newark Diocese, Robert Morris. In the 1970s, she appeared in Robert Wilson’s very early theater productions, in New York and in Europe. She had a lifelong interest in painting and was for some years with the Phoenix Gallery in New York, where her work was shown. She was also, from the 1980s until her death, a member of a small group of women painters—friends—who meet weekly on the subject throughout the year, every year. When she and her husband moved to Fellowship Village, they found new couples enthusiastic about living a life in community. With his death in 2008, she became increasingly connected to the life of the Village itself. She is survived by her three children: Lloyd Peter Wise of Bellevue, WA [Tracy Steadman], Alice Wise Dew of Brookfield, CT [Edward M. Dew IV], and Edward V.W. Wise of Rumson, NJ [Kaye Fiske]; and by her eight grandchildren: Lloyd and Gwen Wise; Nathaniel and Adam Dew, and Dean, Jack, Glen and Kylie Wise.
