Obituary of Carl Joseph Wimley

Carl Joseph Wimley, 87, passed away at his home on February 24, 2013. He was a resident of Basking Ridge for 54 years. Carl grew up in Verona, and attended preparatory school in West Orange, NJ where he was a standout goal tender on the hockey team. He was voted to the All-Metropolitan team, and had the honor of playing in Madison Square Garden where he was able to practice with the NY Rangers, facing their famous Colville, Colville and Shibicky line. Carl graduated from high school early to enlist in the US Navy to fight in World War II. He received the Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal and an Asian Pacific Medal - 1 star. He served on the USS LST 563, the USS HENNEPIN (AK-187) the USS Pine Island (AV-12) and the USS OBSERVER (AMC-91). He reached the rank of Signal Man 2nd Class, and he was honorably discharged in 1946 after serving 2 years, 3 months and 5 days. Carl then attended Seton Hall University from which he graduated in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts. Carl worked as a disc jockey during the early years of Seton Hall's WSOU Pirate radio station, and he hosted one of the most popular shows during those early years called "Requests Required." Carl fielded call in requests and added lively commentary to the delight of his listeners. His deep baritone voice and dynamic personality would go on to serve him well, as he frequently spoke in public and loved to entertain an audience. Carl spent most of his professional career working in the insurance industry and retired as Senior Vice President of Field Operations for Rollins Hudig Hall in New York City. Carl was also a licensed private detective and owned Statewide Investigations for many years. He worked on some well-known criminal cases in New Jersey, but none more famous than the Federal "Butenko" spy case, where he worked for the defense against the federal prosecution team led by Bobby Kennedy. He is survived by his loving wife Adrienne, his five children, Sherry Fox, Lee Ann Wimley, Betty Owen, Linda Ingling, C. J. Wimley, and 6 grandchildren.
