Walt, founder of the famous ‘Brushwood Open’ where the Zimmerman’s, Collin’s’, Marino’s and Kenwell’s fought hard at Roxiticus to win the coveted 8’ long neighborhood ‘Brushwood’ sign….in some cases winning was actually losing when you had to carry the sign home. My favorite Walt Zimmerman story, was when our youngest daughter Caroline (5 yrs) decided to pack her pink suitcase and run away to the Zimmerman home across the street. Walter welcomed her into the house, asked her what she was doing and replied that she was running away! He then asked her to come into the family room and meet all his children, some having grown and living away. Caroline replied, “I think not” I just want to be with you! From that time on, Uncle Walt couldn’t help responding to many of us, “I think not’ ……… Many fond memories in B’vile, Orchid Island with Jane! We will miss him!

We are deeply saddened to learn of Walt’s passing. He was a larger-than-life guy with a wicked and wonderful sense of humor, combined with rock solid character and a huge heart.
The only memory I have of Walt being flustered was the beautiful Spring morning-the first day of the B’ville Little League season-when he woke up at his Mountaintop home to find that the 8 Ridleys had silently pitched a tent the prior evening on his front lawn and we’re waiting for him to emerge and yell “Play Ball”.
That made up for the vicious rumor we had spread that Bill Bradley had scored 100 points on him as Walt defended his beloved Festus High against arch rival Crystal City.
What we’ll remember most ,though, is the obvious love that Walt had for Jane and their 7 children. He was devoted to them all; and this shone through as recently as earlier this year when we had a warm and wonderful dinner with Walt and reminisced at length and withlove about our dozen plus one.
One final memory: Once while talking to Walt about a trip we had taken or were about to take, he imparted a piece of wisdom to me I’ll never forget.” There are only 3 sacred places in the World that must be seen: The American Cemetery in France, Gettysburg, and Augusta National. That pretty well sums Walt up. Godspeed.
