Obituary of William A Lampert
William Alan Lampert, 92, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024, at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge, NJ. Born on October 17, 1931 in Union City, NJ to Emma and Emil Lampert, Bill lived a long and rewarding life, highlighted by his dedication to family, friends and service to others.
Bill spent the first ten years of his life in Jersey City, before his family settled in Tenafly. Bill studied accounting at Fordham University, graduating in 1953. Shortly after graduation, with the Korean War having just ended, Bill enlisted in the Army, serving as a company clerk in Columbus, GA for two years. Bill then put his accounting degree to work, starting a long and distinguished career as a cost accountant for Allied Chemical Corporation (later Honeywell, Inc). Bill would work for Allied/Honeywell for 35 years, and was truly proud of this accomplishment. After retirement from Honeywell in 1990, Bill started a second career with the American Red Cross, first as a bookkeeper, and then as a Braille transcriber, meticulously and painstakingly transcribing math and reading books for blind children. Bill’s 25-year career with the Red Cross was an extremely rewarding part of his life.
Bill married his sweetheart Anne Marie McKenna on September 28, 1957, a marriage that would last 54 years until her passing in 2011. Bill and Anne started their lives together in Jackson Heights, Queens. After moving to Bayside, Queens for a time, they moved to Garden City, NY where they raised their family from 1961 through 1971. Following their time in Long Island, they relocated to Basking Ridge, where they spent their remaining years.
In Bill’s free time, he loved working in his vegetable garden in his spacious backyard on Concord Lane, dedicating endless hours to his tomato, squash, zucchini, and potato plants, which he proudly shared with family and friends. In addition, Bill was an accomplished calligraphist, beautifully recreating poems, famous speeches, and meaningful quotations for display in his home and office.
Bill is survived by his three children and their spouses, Kathy (Ken) McBrady of Madison, NJ, Paul (Leann) Lampert of Sebastian, FL, and Ken (Lisa) Lampert of Winchester, MA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren - Michael, Ken, Natalie, Carolyn, Patrick, Jack, and Tommy - as well as his pride and joy, his great-granddaughter Lily. In addition, Bill is survived by his brother Bob (Jean) Lampert, of Park Ridge, NJ, his sister-in-law Maureen Brown of West Hempstead, NY, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bill will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul, full of love for his family and friends. A man of few words, he spoke with much wisdom and a dry sense of humor that brought joy to those who met him.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at the Church of St. James, 184 S. Finley Ave, Basking Ridge.
