John was a friend of mine for nearly 50 years. I first met him in the late 70’s when I started my graphic arts studio. He came to see a client of mine in the same building. We started talking and he said he was doing some repairs on a house he recently purchased in Chatham. Coincidentally, I was also a new home owner. We realized we had much in common: both self-employed, married and would soon be starting our families. Our businesses serviced the same industry.
I cannot overstate how much he helped me in establishing myself in the local advertising community. In the pre-internet days, businesses grew and survived through word of mouth. Chatham Arts was a relatively new business, but John seemed to know everyone already. Around 1981, I designed a Chatham Arts promotional poster that was beautifully printed and widely distributed. We won a medal from the Art Directors Club of NJ. For months, I noticed my poster hanging on the wall of every potential new client I visited. That kind of publicity was priceless. I will be forever grateful.
In reading Matt’s remembrance, he so accurately described what it was like at Chatham Arts back then. John’s pursuit of perfection in his craft was contagious and so evident in his team. Chatham Arts was the premier silk screen shop. But John had a way of making doing the best work possible fun. Music playing constantly and laughter filled the air. What a way to spend your workday.
John was also very generous. A couple of times a year, he would print my promotional vacation closing announcements, invitations and holiday cards after hours often with help from his staff - at no cost to me. All beautifully printed.
Hanging out with John was just fun. He had an incredible sense of humor and was really smart. I have memories that still make me laugh out loud today.
My condolences go out to Maureen, John Jr., Jennifer and his grandchildren at this very sad time of loss. John’s spirit will will live on in all who knew and loved him, and what a gift that is.
Rest in peace my friend.

The 1990s at Chatham Arts were not just a chapter in my life—they were a celebration of the vibrancy and joy that John Denton brought into our daily work. To say that John worked alongside us somehow feels like an understatement. He embodied the spirit of what it means to find passion in your work, blurring the lines between labor and play, between dedication and outright fun.
I remember the echo of our laughter mingling with the sounds of whatever music was fueling our day—loud and infectious. Our tasks seemed lighter, the days shorter, and it was all because of John's unwavering energy and enthusiasm. It was commonplace to hear someone remark, "There they go again," as if our revelry was as much a part of the job as the art we were surrounded by.
Yet, never was our commitment to the cause in question, for the job always got done, and done well. Each project completed was a testament to the perfect balance we struck between enjoyment and efficiency—a balance that John orchestrated effortlessly.
To have worked at Chatham Arts during those years is to have received a gift—a timeless highlight of camaraderie and shared purpose. And as I reflect on those irreplaceable times, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to Maureen, his children John Jr. and Jen, and to all the grandchildren who no doubt carry the spark of John's legacy.
When they look back on their moments with Papa John, I trust they are filled with the same warmth and fondness that his presence instilled in all of us. May every shared story, every recollected phrase, every melody from our past serve as a tribute to a man who brought so much life to Chatham Arts and to all of us who had the pleasure to be called his friend and colleague.
John's laughter may have quieted, but the impact of his joyous spirit reverberates still. Rest in peace, dear friend, and know that your memory is etched into the hearts of those who had the joy of knowing you.
