Manning hired me to work at Teleport in late 1994, and we remained close until his retirement in 2016. He was my mentor, friend, and someone I liked and admired. His friendship, sense of humor, and decency were terrific. Manning was a great lawyer, but that means far less than who he was as a person
I had the great privilege of eating with the family many years ago and enjoyed them all.
Manning has left us far too young.

Manning had joined my landscape painting class a few years before Covid struck, and continued through our virtual classes on Zoom, and then was back when we resumed in-person classes in 2022. All of my students are dedicated artists and Manning was no exception. What made him stand out as an addition to our group was both his passion for learning new approaches to painting as well as his passion for being a friend to all of the new people he met. I could always count on Manning to immediately introduce himself to the newest students, making them feel welcome and safe. He took an interest in everyone and loved the camaraderie that he himself embodied every time he walked through the door.
He created beautiful oil paintings based on his own travels, with a special interest in the rocky coastlines of Ireland, another passion that he and I both shared. He had a poetic soul, making evocative works out of the scenes he had captured, turning them into lived experiences. He and Julie were also great supporters and collectors of my own work, which was made even more personal by the mutual respect we had for each other.
I didn’t know Manning for very long, but he made an impact on my life. He showed how an honest, kind, and caring individual with a continued positive outlook can make the lives of others happier in this world.

Memories of my brother-in-law, Manning: Playing "Oregon Trail" with him and the kids; Games of tennis in Westchester, Illinois; Golfing at the VA hospital; Playing baseball in the rain with Brian and Brendan; Trying to match wits with his Mr. Commissioner March Madness posts (impossible!); Receiving with delight a Chief Illini mug he'd picked up at a garage sale in Maryland...what a fun guy and wonderful person. I'll miss him dearly.

How blessed is Manning Lee to leave such a rich legacy behind him to make the world a better place! A lovely wife in his best friend Julie who with him raised children of genuine faith, generous hearts, fine minds, and a strong professional work ethic. And then there are the young grandchildren. They might not understand as yet why their grandfather--this fun-loving, wonderful, gentle man--will no longer be by their side at the dining room table sharing dessert or on the sofa just snuggling, at their bedside spinning a yarn or on the ballfield playing catch, or on the beach blanket gazing out to sea. This is for Manning's children, whose faith will comfort them, so that they, in turn, may comfort their young ones.
I am standing on the seashore. A ship spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. I stand watching her in sadness until she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says, "She is gone." Gone where? The loss of sight is in me, not in her. Just at that moment when someone says, "She is gone," there are others who are watching her coming. Other voices on another shore take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"
That is dying. (Henry Scott Holland)

I came to know Manning somewhat while a member of the St. James Men of Charity. I found him to be a wise gentle lovable human being who actively sought to help folks experiencing sick situations and or had fallen on hard times. I found it always pleasant to be in his presence and I enjoyed very much the conversations we had , many of which centered about Notre Dame football. Upon reading his obituary and learning more about his life I’ve concluded Manning while loving his labors and his neighbors spread Christ’s love to help make our world a better place. Julie- My spouse Joan and I express our sincerest condolences on Manning’s passing to you and all his loved ones for you’ll all miss him much . As for him he suffers no more and his star still shines to guide us from where saints and angels live.

I had the privilege of having worked with Manning for 10+ years at TCG & AT&T, and I have only pleasant, fond memories of Manning. He was always willing to help everyone in any way possible, professional, friendly, and with an infectious sense of humor. I am a better person for having known him.
I will always think of him in the most positive light.

To The Family of Manning:
I am so sorry to hear of Manning's passing! We worked together for many years at TCG, and met annually at the Grain House for reunion lunches for years after. I was unaware he was ill, and only just heard of his passing this evening from a friend. Please accept my deepest condolences. He was a good man, deeply devoted to family and friends, whom he spoke of often. Ken Shulman
