For several years, I had the privilege of Coach Tom coaching baseball teams upon which my sons Chris and Mike played. On several occasions after these teams were done, I thanked Tom for the positive impact he had on Chris and Mike. Although they were children at the time, Tom didn't treat them as such. When they played well, he complimented them, and when they didn't play well, he was not bashful about letting them know. He didn't abide by the "participation trophy" mentality to which so many parents adhere, and he set a high standard. On several occasions, I told Tom that he had an impact on the two of them that a father might not be able to have. His approach was not popular with most parents in Basking Ridge, but I applaud him for it.
I've spoken about this with Chris and Mike often and they agree, playing for Coach Tom was a wonderful experience. We sometime reflect back on all the games we won and we laugh at his antics. (You won't find many umpires who laugh at Coach Tom's antics!).
In short, thanks Coach Tom!
