I am so sorry to hear of this and your loss. David is and will be missed here on Church Road forever. He was such a kind and interesting person and I loved when I happened accross him on my daily walks down Church Road where we would get caught up in chatting about life. I will never forget when he showed up at my front door with a quiche when I was so sick from COVID. David was one of those souls that makes an imprint in your life forever. My condolences to his family and especially to Ken... may you find peace in having known him and loved him for as long as he was here... RIP kind soul....

How lucky I was to call David my friend for almost 35 years. He was one of the kindest, caring, and most generous people I have every known. Mischievous, interested and interesting, impeccable in his person and homes, he cultivated friendships as lovingly as he cultivated his beautiful flower gardens. David and I loved to sing together. He had a beautiful tenor voice and we especially loved singing in hymns, and the good Methodist that he was, he knew them all. There are too many memories to share but one favorite is he and Ken visiting me on Christmas Eve many years ago. We were bemoaning the fact that no one goes caroling. At exactly midnight, it starting lightly snowing. Dave and I looked at each other, he with that mischievous grin, we put on our coats and went on my porch and caroled away. Ken always loving hearing him sing In the Bleak Mid Winter. It is ironic he left us in the bleak mid winter but the love he shared with us will keep us warm through all seasons.

So many wonderful family memories in church and the neighborhood, and I always wanted 5 boys because I “baby sat” the 4 of you, though not that much your senior. Our parents shared a great friendship which has been a continuing conversation with my sister and me. God’s peace as he holds you on his embrace. Special peace to you, Mr. Johnstone.

Fred/Steve/Doug/Tom,
I have many fond memories of David. Your brother kept many of laughing on the many long canoe trips we took in the 70's and his smile made the day brighter. I am sorry we lost touch as everyone went separate directions after Berkeley Heights, but know that David's intelligence and humor enriched everyone he came to know. You and your dad are in my prayers this week.

Beverly Mintzer said what I would’ve said. He was my colorist since 2000. Every 8 weeks. We knew about his life, including you, always mentioned. David was generous with compliments but kept criticism mostly to himself. He hated having his photo taken but let me take this one in May 2022. Will think of him every time I see a vintage car or a dahlia. He will be deeply missed.

Ken,
Through David and You I’ve gotten to enjoy so many experiences. I’m thankful to both of you for that. I Miss David Greatly. He will continue to have a Sparkling Presence in the Salon that no one could fill. I will miss our conversations from Antiestablishmentarianism to Zygophyllaceous. ( Thats for you David! ). I will miss our creative collaborations and the fun we had together with our clients. Thank You for the laughs David.
To David’s beloved Ken, Your Life Together will forever be part of your story and I pray those memories will continue to comfort you.
To David’s family my deepest condolences he was a very Special Man.

Ken,
You don’t know me yet but David talked about you all the time. David colored my hair for 25 years. Every six weeks I looked forward to my appointment with him. Not only because I knew my color would look great; but because every session was an adventure. We talked about everything in the span of an hour. Politics, current events, theatre, music, life, death, what we heard on NPR, Block Island, Shelter Island and so much more. He was always kind and caring towards me and I will miss him and never forget him. I wish you all the strength you need to weather your loss.
Sincerely, Beverly Mintzer
