Obituary of Vincent Sobocinski

Vincent John “Jack” Sobocinski departed this life with his wife, Carolyn Jean Sobocinski, at his side on July 12, 2023, at his home in Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge, N.J.

Loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, Jack was born October 26, 1927, in Newark, NJ, the son of John and Stella Sobocinski. He attended St. Benedict’s Prep, earned a degree in chemical engineering at Columbia University, where he played fullback on the football team, and received an MBA from Northwestern University. While stationed with the U.S. Army Chemical Corps at Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah, Jack met his future wife and the love of his life, Carolyn (nee Slaymaker) in Salt Lake City. The couple recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. After military service, Jack worked as a chemical engineer at United Oil Products before beginning a long career in the research and engineering division of Exxon-Mobil, from which he retired in 1986.

A devout Catholic and generous benefactor of many Catholic charities and organizations, Jack was a long-time parishioner of St. James Catholic Church in Basking Ridge. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Stephen and Robert, his sisters Adele Tracy and Dorothy Marolt, and infant daughter, Jean Marie Sobocinski. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, and five children: Vincent Sobocinski, Jr. (Kathleen) of Blue Bell, PA, Gregory Sobocinski (Cynthia) of Southampton, NJ, Andrea Carter (Paul Carter Jr) of McLean, VA, Veronica Kohl (George Kohl Jr) of Basking Ridge, Stephen Sobocinski (Joan) of Marlton, NJ, 20 grandchildren and 13 (soon to be 14) great grandchildren.
