Obituary of Susan McCarthy Cushing

Susan L. McCarthy-Cushing, 60, passed away peacefully at her home in Bernardsville with her family by her side. She was born in Jersey City, the daughter of John P. Sr. and Georgia McCarthy both deceased. Susan graduated Bernards High School, Penn State Univ. and obtained her MSW at Fordham Univ. She worked under the auspices of Lutheran Medical Ctr in the Brooklyn School system counseling at risk, neglected children for 23 years. Susan was passionate about human causes-social, political and legal. She worked tirelessly for supporting the homeless and intervening on behalf of abused children. She was an athlete completing 2 NY marathons and a swimmer, enjoyed travel, reading and political commentary. She is survived by her loving husband John who cared for her daily as she battled ALS and her nephew who she raised, Sean McCarthy. She was predeceased by a sister Bridget and brother Greg and survived by siblings Maureen, John Jr, Georgia, Barbara, Melissa and Tracey. She was a caring aunt to many nieces and nephews who along with countless friends, patients and co-workers, will sorely miss her. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on August 31, 2012 at 10:00AM at The Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 111 Claremont Road, Bernardsville, NJ. A visitation will be held on August 30, 20122-4 and 6-8PM at the Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ.
