George Henry, as his mother Ruth always referred to him, was my father's cousin. It was disappointing that our families lived in different states and didn't see one another often.
But George made up for that through his correspondence, and sharing of genealogical information. He was the go-to guy for family history.
And one year, I joined him on one of his famous (infamous) trips. We quickly discovered our differences - I wanted to know where we were going and when we would get there. With no definite schedule or plans, George was more laid
back, open to exploring. We both survived the trip.
Three cousins - George Henry, Howard Applegate, and my father, Warren (Rib) Hall - all got together for the last time in Sturbridge, MA at his son Nick's. Lots of laughter, reminiscing, and some adult beverages.
When my father died, George Henry sent me a simple but meaningful letter, closing with "I have known him all my life and I shall miss him."
And so, at this sad time, that same sentiment applies -
George Henry Applegate, I have known you all my life, and I miss you.
