Obituary of Serafina "Sally" Nigro

Serafina ‘Sally’ Nigro Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sister and Companion Serafina ‘Sally’ Nigro (nee Racaniello), age 75, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 12, 2021 in the company of loved ones in Morristown, New Jersey. Sally is survived by her long-time love and companion, Barry Schlesinger, her two sons, John Nigro of Townsend, Delaware and James Nigro (Vivienne) of Mendham, New Jersey, her brother, Joseph Racaniello (Mary Ann) of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, her sister Rose Blacklock (Michael) of Covington, Louisiana, her grandchildren, James Vincent Nigro, Nicholas Nigro, Anthony Nigro, Jade Nigro, and Gregory Nigro, three nieces and two nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Sally was born on June 16, 1945 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Orange, New Jersey to Joseph and Ediconda ‘Connie’ Racaniello and was raised in West Orange, New Jersey. She married at a young age and was 19 years old when her first son, John, was born. Sally raised her sons all by herself in a home in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. She was a devoted, loving mother that did whatever she could to see that her sons were happy and well taken care of over the years. When they were younger, Sally used to treat her sons to summer visits to the Jersey Shore, trips to the local shop for comic books, visits to see extended family, cooking their favorite meals (she was an awesome cook), baking their favorite treats (she was an awesome baker, too), late-night trips to White Castle, and going all out for special occasions like birthdays and holidays, among many other things. Sally worked as Assistant Tax Collector for Chatham Township, New Jersey for 25 years before retiring from that position at the end of 2009. Sally was always an extremely kind, thoughtful, and generous individual that always put others before herself. Sally absolutely loved being a grandmother, and thoroughly enjoyed spoiling her grandkids on a regular basis. For Sally, being a grandmother was the “best thing ever!” Sally also enjoyed playing the lottery and going to casinos periodically to play the slot machines. She also loved to watch classic and B-movie horror flicks, rightfully earning the title, “Queen of the B-Movies”. Sally had a knack for remembering the names of nearly every actor and actress that she had seen in the movies and on television over the years, as well as many details of movies and shows, which meant she was a virtual encyclopedia of movie and television knowledge. Sally was truly a special and caring person that was genuinely loved by her family and friends. Her passing has generated a significant loss, and she will be profoundly missed. Cremation service is private, and a memorial celebration will be scheduled at a later date. Sally’s final resting place will be Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
