Obituary of Mary E Thompson

Mary Ellen McKeon Thompson of Millington, NJ, entered peacefully into eternal rest on July 24, 2020, at the home of her daughter Geraldine, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on August 15 1936 in Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland to Francis and Ellen McKeon. She studied nursing in Dublin and midwifery at the Rotunda in Scotland before emigrating to New York City where she worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Mary met her beloved husband Robert Francis Thompson in New York; they were married in 1965. Her nursing career spanned many years, having graced the hallways while comforting the sick at hospitals across NY and NJ. Mary spent the latter part of her career caring for the monks at St. Mary’s Abbey. Mary’s husband Bob passed away in 1983. She is survived by her four children: Theresa Gallic (Bob) of Gillette, Geraldine Guinee (Jim) of Berkeley Heights, Robert F. Thompson Jr (Tara) of Summit and Mary Ellen Salaki (John) of Basking Ridge. Mary was the proud grandmother to her 20 grandchildren: Robert, Christine, Jennifer, Michelle, Brian, Clare and Daniel Gallic; Eileen, Brittany and Meghan Guinee; Robert, Stephen, David, Bridget, Maura and Christopher Thompson; Jack, Matthew, Luke and Finley Salaki. She is also survived by 4 great- grandchildren. Mary is also survived by her siblings Elizabeth Grills of London, England; Catherine Boyle of VA; Teresa Leever of CA; Hannah Michels of GA; Clare Buchanan of CA. She was predeceased by her siblings Christina McDonald, Carmel Mooney, Thomas McKeon and Betty Lent. She was much loved by her many nieces and nephews. Mary was a devout Catholic and left a legacy of faith to her family. She was a daily communicant for most of her adult life; her love for her family was exceeded only by her love for Christ. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 S. Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.
