I was so deeply saddened when I read that Irene had passed away. When I first started teaching PE in Trenton, NJ, she was the art teacher. She was a most wonderful colleague and friend, I missed her dearly when she retired years before me. I am so truly sorry for your loss and my sincerest condolences are with you at this time. May she rest peacefully.

Lisa and Madeline,
So sad for you this week.
We will miss Irene, she was such a dear person and a true character. Some great memories: speed walking in her big floppy hat on Folly Beach, dancing in a dashiki at the Spoleto Reggae Block Party, driving that Volvo so slowly down Folly Road. And always with lipstick! We all loved her.
We hope you will carry good memories with you always.
Love, Ashley Tate Glenn and Zeke

Dear Noonan family,
I think you know that Tammy and I consider our Duke friends to be family, such that losing Irene is like losing a dear family member. I think that often when people attempt to express empathy in a difficult situation, they will say "I know" even though they really can't and don't. Some things are just very hard to imagine. Many or most of us in the Duke group are at a point in life where, from personal experience, we can say "I know how you feel" because we do. Although it is magnified by the current state of the world, we know how the pain and sorrow feel in this situation and we are so very sorry. From the way Irene lived her life, it was easy for you all to tell how (I love this word Sasha and Tammy) fiercely she loved you and I know that she knew how much you all loved her.
We love you too.
David and Tammy

Dear Lisa, Madeline, Michael, and Mark and family.
I sure loved your mother! She was so fun and lively and quirky and sporty and creative. She had a great way of rolling her eyes and saying what was on her mind...(kind of like her daughter, my long-time dear friend). So, so sorry for your loss in this most difficult era. Wishing you all peace and love and strength to get through the next chapters. All my best, Lisa 2

On this sad occasion it is with a warm heart that I recall visits to Lawrenceville after treks home with my college roommate Mark. Although my memories of Mark’s mom Irene are faint, Mark’s stories and remembrances of his mother Irene have painted a vivid picture in my mind of a strong and independent woman, a committed and loving mother and grandmother, and a passionate artist and maker. From these impressions I see an individual possessing both the courage and capacity to follow her own path, appreciating and sharing beauty along the way. It is clear from the character and talent of the children and grandchildren that she leaves behind that Irene’s creativity, self-reliance and commitment to family will live on.
My condolences to all the Noonan family. I am so sorry for your loss.

Dear Mark, Michael and Lisa, Your mother will obviously be missed by many who loved her and admired her zest for life! I met her only a few times but remember her well. A lot of those memories are from Mark and Sasha and my husband David and the other Duke guys of course, But none the less, she is remembered fondly for her strength and UNIQUE & BOLD personality! I was raised by a single divorced mother also and she struggled to find her identity, Irene did not!
I know you all three have unique and distinct personalities! That can be tough on families for sure! Life is difficult just as it is precious, today embrace the LOVE she so fiercely displayed for each of you! Cherish the colorful way she lived! My vision is that which Sasha emphasized, Irene dancing into heaven...she was not alone.
God's Blessings on you all!
The memories are real but so is the pain you are feeling now. Our prayers are with you as you say your earthly goodbyes...
We carry you in our hearts.
Love always,
Tammy & David Grigg

Irene was one of the most life-affirming people we've ever known. She handled both adversity and good fortune with humor, perspective, and determination. She laid the foundation for her children's successful lives but not at the sacrifice of her sense of self. We saw how proud she was of her grandchildren and how she challenged them to remain authentically true to themselves. Irene had a probing sense of curiosity and a real commitment to sharing what she knew, to the benefit of others. We will remember her fondly.
Condolences to all the family.

I have so many happy, vivid memories of my aunt Irene woven through the years. The Jersey shore, her home in Lawrenceville, holidays. She volunteered at Grounds for Sculpture and actually got me a regular gig there.
I’m going to miss her quarks and our conversations.

Mark, Mike and Lisa we are so sorry to hear of your loss. I have nothing but fond memories of the stories Mark would tell about your Mom whom loved you all dearly. An independent woman, who was true to her beliefs, and who forged her own way in the world. A strong, single woman who raised her three children, ensuring their education at fine universities, before working on her own degree. A creative, compassionate woman who showed her inner city students about the arts and dance. A woman who has made a difference.
