From Margaret McDonald, Shirley's Sister
My sister couldn’t have been a more lovely human being.
As a child she was very trusting. At the age of 10, I was often responsible for looking after Shirley and we enjoyed our time out and about. Shirley has an absolute hatred of flies. One of the quickest ways to get her home was to suddenly pretend that there were a lot of flies about!
That said, there was a lot of respect between us and she often sought my opinions. With Shirley’s early boyfriends, she would often bring them home for me to interrogate and scrutinize!
Over the years we have kept in touch through letters and cassette tapes, charting the developments of our lives.
When my husband John died, she took to ringing me every week. It was such a blessing. Our long regular conflabs would cover a vast range of topics. From reminiscing about our childhood and families to discussing political events on both sides of the pond. We moaned and laughed together about absolutely anything, putting the world well and truly to rights.
In later years, our jovial banter and rivalry continued with an eternal vigour as we communicated by email. She would casually address me as her older, very MUCH older sister, and teasingly sign off as my beautiful and very much younger sister.

Shirley was a beautiful woman inside and out. We only knew her for a short time, but she was such a lovely presence in our lives. I will never forget when I first met her, as she was showing us around our house, how kind she was to my then 2 year old son. My son, who is now 5, would get so excited when he would see Shirley- often shouting through the window to get her attention.
Shirley would often share stories of her boys. One of my favorite was how she potty trained her boys with m&m’s, which was a big treat since they didn’t have much candy. Her love for them was so apparent, as was her love for Warren. They always spoke of eachother with such admiration. It is a beautiful testament to what a loving marriage looks like.
Shirley taught my boys, and myself, about all of the different flowers and plants that grew in our backyard. I remember telling her how beautiful her yard was and I said something like “you should do something with this, you’re so talented.” She sweetly laughed and said “oh Americans, always thinking something needs to be done for a reason. I just do it because I love it.” Shirley was a kind, funny, smart and beautiful woman. Even though we only knew her for a short time, we feel grateful to have known her.
We are praying for peace and healing for Warren, Nick, and Tim. Shirley will be greatly missed but her warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit will be remembered forever.
Our deepest condolences,
The Aldrich Family

I would like to echo Sheila's beautiful tribute to Shirley. I also met Shirley at the end of the 60's, remember her Bibs habit (no-one modelled Biba better) and a certain addiction to chocolate digestive.
Always so full of life and fun Shirley inspired you to be a beaver version of yourself and we shared some memorable adventures hitch-hiking in Europe.
She has remained a dear friend over the years and I have felt as close to her as ever despite the distance between us. She loved life and everything good in it. Honest, compassionate and thoughtful I will miss her so much.
My thoughts are with her beloved Warren, Tim and Nick and I will treasure her memory always.

Shirley was my friend and flat mate while we were studying Sociology in London from 1969 to 1972, We were quite alike and shared a healthy rivalry when it came to shopping at Biba. We had such fun in that flat, 15 Staverton Road, Willesden Green.
Warren shared it with us for a while too. I admired her so much; she had such charm and presence, and she was, of course, so beautiful. Shirley without doubt was a radiant being, her joy and love shone through her personality unfailingly. Although we were miles apart I felt incredibly close to her; a kindred spirit in our love for nature and social justice. I will miss her so much.

We are all incredibly saddened by the passing of Shirley – a wonderful person, wife, mother and sister-in-law – who left us far too soon. Shirley always brought laughter and warmth to family gatherings with her beaming smile, jovial personality and fun-loving humor. She was an exquisite hostess with immaculate taste and refinement who always made her guests feel special with her abundant hospitality. My siblings and I are eternally grateful for Shirley’s tireless devotion over many years to helping my parents, Virginia and Carlyle, who so very much appreciated and loved her. Susan and I extend our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies to my brother Warren and my nephews Tim and Nick who will miss Shirley very much.

I was lucky enough to meet Shirley about 23 years ago. Even though I moved from Berkeley Heights back to Australia we kept in touch over the years.
Our sons Nick and Greg were good friends at Thomas P Hughes Elementary School.
Shirley and I used to meet several mornings a week and walk through the beautiful woods of Berkeley Heights, after which a ‘cuppa’ in her exquisite garden got our day off to a good start.
We would visit many open gardens....stopping for lunch or morning tea along the way. Pumpkin picking with our boys was terrific, something quite different for an Aussie ‘Sheila’. These memories I have cherished and remain with me to this day.
Inspector Morse was our shared passion! John Thaw in particular. A white wine and a couple of episodes one or two evenings a week. Maybe a couple of wines and one episode??
My sadness in losing my beautiful vibrant and steadfast friend is beyond words.
Warren Tim and Nick my heartfelt thoughts are with you always.
