Mary McLaren Hoens
Mary McLaren Hoens, of Basking Ridge, N.J., passed away suddenly on May 3, 2012.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit the Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Ave., Basking Ridge on Wednesday, May 9, from 2 to 4 pm and from 6 to 8pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 10 at 10 am at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, One East Oak St, Basking Ridge, followed by interment in the Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, N.J.
Born in Elizabeth in 1925, Mrs. Hoens was awarded her bachelor's degree from Kean University and earned two graduate degrees from Rutgers University's Graduate School of Education. She taught elementary school and served as a vice principal in Newark for twenty years before retiring. She then devoted herself to a wide variety of civic and philanthropic causes, which included many years of service with the Presbyterian Homes Foundation.
She was a past chief daughter of Lady Helen McLaren Lodge, and a member of Bonnie Doon Lodge #10, Daughters of Scotia. In addition she was a member of Emmaus Chapter 183, OES, and was active with the AAUW.
She was predeceased by the love of her life, Charles H. Hoens, Jr., with whom she enjoyed traveling the world and whose memory she cherished deeply. She is survived by her beloved daughter, the Honorable Helen E. Hoens, a Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, and the Justice's husband, Robert W. Schwaneberg. Mrs. Hoens is also survived by her sons Charles H. Hoens, III, and his wife Lorna, John M. Hoens and his wife Alice, and Thomas W. Hoens and his wife Karym. In addition to her children she leaves eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
