Obituary of Sister Lydia Hering
SISTER LYDIA HERING 90, former Supervisor at Old Army Road, Bernardsville, Nursing Home
Sister Lydia Hering, 90, Deaconess Sister for 61 years with Fellowship Deaconry Ministries in Bernards Township, Liberty Corner, was called Home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Monday, September 23, 2019, after a short illness.
Sister Lydia was born in Kurowo, Poland on February 8, 1929. She had five brothers and four sisters, and throughout World War II, they experienced many atrocities, separations and deaths in the family. After the war, Lydia was reunited with some members of her family, and held various jobs to support her widowed mother and younger brothers who were still in school. For three years she held a job in a steel mill as a licensed crane driver, and over the years, often regaled us with humorous stories about her experiences.
In 1956, she immigrated to the USA, sponsored by her uncle, who had already settled in New York and become a born-again Christian. Under his influence, young Lydia attended Christian services at a church in Ridgewood, NY, where Sisters of the Fellowship Deaconry were ministering to German immigrants. The Word of God, brought in the German language by caring Sisters, touched Lydia's heart and she recognized her need of a Savior. It was at a New York City Billy Graham Crusade in 1957 that she and made a public profession of her faith in Jesus. In November 1958, Lydia made the decision to enter the Motherhouse of the Fellowship Deaconry in Liberty Corner, to serve the Lord as a Sister.
In the course of her 61 years of service, Sister Lydia worked among children in Camp Sunshine, in Elburn, Illinois, at our church in Cincinnati, in the Fellowship Deaconry Conference Center's Dining Room and Sewing Room, and for decades serving the elderly at the Deaconry Convalescent Home in Bernardsville. Sister Lydia is best known for her love of children, music, poetry, crafts, dolls, sewing, and stamp collecting. We will miss her sense of humor, her recitation of poetry she composed, and her marvelous creativity. Sister Lydia served the Lord long and well.
She is survived by her sister Helene and brother Heinrich, both residents of Germany.
Sister Lydia's funeral service will be held on Monday, September 30, 2019, at the Maranatha Chapel of Fellowship Deaconry Ministries, 3575 Valley Road, Liberty Corner, at 10:00 AM, followed by the interment at Somerset Hills Memorial Park. A luncheon will follow in the Main Dining Room of Fellowship Deaconry Ministries.
In lieu of flowers, Sister Lydia may be remembered by a donation to Fellowship Deaconry Ministries Sisters' Fund.
