To Jim's family,
As an architect, I have had the pleasure to have known and worked with Jim for several years. He immediately stood out among so many building science specialists in the field for broad depth knowledge of materials and products - probably because of his background in chemistry and understanding of construction and sustainability. Jim was my go-to guy for questions and he always was so generous with his time and technical resources. He was straight forward person, easy to talk with, with a great sense of humor. I have a treasured (digital) file with all his articles and white papers. His gift to me (and the professional).
He will be sorely missed by so many and impossible to replace.
My deepest sympathies to all,
David Levine

Jim
I’ve been reaching out to you and was very concerned about not hearing from you. Now I’ve learned this horrific news. May you Rest In Peace.
As Herb so concisely stated ‘you are an uplifting spirit’. You still are, as my memory senses the same impact that you have that you have bestowed on all that you have been in contact.
You always spoke so lovingly of your family.
We sincerely miss you.

To All in Jim's Family
I'm sorry to be so late in offering my sincere condolences to all of you. I am an architect who relied extensively upon Jim for technical advice and counsel for many years. During that time I had the opportunity to get to know him quite well and the pleasure of a relationship that transcended the professional reasons that brought us together. I spoke to Jim many times during the period when he was battling that dreaded disease. He never complained or said anything that might give you an indication of the seriousness of his illness. Only that he was on the mend and would be back to full strength very soon. Jim was widely recognized as the preeminent authority in his field but I will miss him more for his uplifting spirit than for the technical void that he leaves. He was a special person and I share your sorrow at his loss.
Sincerely,
Herb Mandel

Jim was more than a working colleague but a very good friend. We often shared so many handy tips about building since we both enjoyed the exact same things. I often thought about him more as a brother since he originally was from Oneida just a few miles from our home in skaneateles. I will forever remember him as a good friend! I am happy he is nor suffering anymore and my heartfelt condolences go out to Chris and the sons. He will be truest missed.

I met Jim in 1987 through my husband Denis Igoe when he came to Colorado and supported us as Best Man at our wedding. Den and Jim were classmates at Bishop Guertin HS and remained loyal and close friends over the many years. I enjoyed Jim's wit, playfulness and outgoing nature. It is tragic that Jim suffered so greatly these past few years, and was taken so early in his life. His hard and brave fight is over, may he rest in peace now.
Sincerely and with deepest sympathies, Kathy (and Denis)

I just learned of this 10 minutes ago. I am so stunned and sorry, and send condolences to Christina, William, and John. I knew Jim at UNH, then again at Northeastern, and then in Chicago and he was such a great guy, I barely know what to say. When we were in college, he was always one of the nicest, most considerate people at school, and always willing to spend time to help out a friend with any academic or personal issue. We have sort of spoken less in the last decade or so, but when we did, it was almost always about family, and how important that was to each of us. He was one of the few guys I even opened up to on many topics, and I know one thing, which is how important his family was to him, and how he loved his two sons. Christina, I will be praying for you all in this difficult time.

Jim was a class act. His energy and desire to be the best at his endeavors was an example for us all. But when I think of Jim, I will always remember the joy and love he had for his family...that was where he was a true example. Our prayers our with his family now.
