Obituary of Matthew Lane

Matthew Daniel Lane, Esq., 35, of Bernardsville, beloved brother, son, cousin, nephew, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on August 19, 2018. Born in Somerville, NJ on March 6, 1983, Matthew grew up in Bernardsville, graduated from Bernard’s High School, attended college at Gettysburg College, and received his Juris Doctor from Quinnipiac University. After working as an attorney for a private firm,

Matthew was employed as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety in the Department of Children and Families. He was a student of the law, a believer in social justice, and a passionate advocate for families and children. Matthew loved baseball, history, animals, the beach, spending time with his family and friends, and the music of Bruce Springsteen.

Those close to him will always remember his intellectual curiosity, compassion, and sense of humor.

Matthew is survived by his older brother, Philip, and father, Stephen, and was predeceased by his twin brother, Joseph, in 2009 and his mother, Carmela, in 2017. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 S. Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, NJ. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 24, 2018, 10:00am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 111 Claremont Road, Bernardsville, NJ. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Basking Ridge.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Joseph A. Lane Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be mailed to University of Baltimore Foundation, 1420 North Charles St, Baltimore, MD 21201. Please indicate “Joseph Lane Memorial Scholarship” in the memo line.
