William J. Reynolds
Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather
William J. Reynolds, a longtime resident of Edison, N.J., passed away at age 86 on April 5, 2018 surrounded by his beloved wife, Catherine, and their children.
Bill was born in Irvington, N.J. to William H. Reynolds and Margaret Murphy. The family attended St. Leo’s Roman Catholic Church in Irvington, which his father and uncle, James Reynolds, had built in 1926. Bill attended St. Leo’s grammar school and Irvington High School, and graduated from Villanova University in 1953 with a degree in accounting.
Bill served in the Army for two years, most of it in Korea in the immediate aftermath of the war there. Discharged in 1955, he briefly considered joining the family building business before beginning a career in banking at Carteret Savings and Loan Association in Newark, where he rose to vice president. In 1966, he joined Perth Amboy Savings Institution, where he rose to senior vice president, marketing and finance.
Bill married Catherine Lebzelter, also from Irvington, in 1960. They had five children: Ellen, Katherine, William, Patricia and Thomas. Survivors also include: grandchildren Joan, Sarah and Meredith Abbott; Larisa Reynolds; William and Hannah Reynolds; and Ryan Boutahar; as well as son-in- law Kenneth Abbott, daughter-in- law Leslie Reynolds, and son-in- law Ali Boutahar. Bill loved witty banter. From boyhood, he enjoyed music, the ocean and swimming, and toying with audio-visual equipment. Villanova basketball games thrilled him. He and his family for many years attended St. Helena’s Church in Edison, where he was a lector. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home at 101 South Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, N.J.
