Obituary of Muriel Pecon

Muriel C. Pecon died at home on April 7, 2011. She was 89 years old and a longtime resident of Bernardsville. Born in Illinois, she was a 1939 graduate of Proviso High School in Maywood and attended Northwestern University on a scholarship, studying journalism and hoping to work in radio communications. She became a travel booking agent for the Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad, where she worked until her marriage. Muriel met her future husband Joseph at an ice skating rink, when he was serving in the Navy during WWII and stationed at the Chicago Navy Pier. They were married in 1947 and subsequently moved to New Jersey, where they bought property in Bernardsville and built their home. Muriel and her husband were charter members of the Somerset Hills Lutheran Church and had a long history of active membership. Over the years, Muriel taught Sunday school and served on various committees including altar guild and in financial roles. Muriel was predeceased by Joseph, her husband of 63 years, and a sister Audrey Butkus. Surviving are her 3 daughters Sally Pecon, Linda Blakely and her husband Douglas, Jill Pecon Slattery, and 2 grandchildren, Stuart Slattery and his wife Sandra, and Rochelle Blakely. A memorial service is planned for 2pm Sunday, April 10 at Somerset Hills Lutheran Church, 350 Lake Road, Basking Ridge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Muriel's name to the Somerset Hills Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. A later ceremony for family members will take place at Somerset Hills Memorial Park.
