Obituary of Philip G Jones
Philip G. Jones – 94 years old, formally of Bernardsville and Basking Ridge, passed away on Sunday September 3, 2017 at the Veterans Memorial Home, in Paramus New Jersey.
Mr. Jones was born in Marstons Mills, Massachusetts on April 11, 1923.
Mr. Jones proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. His record of service began in December 1942 which included serving on the USS Satterlee DD 626 as a Sonar Operator. His tour of duty included various escort missions carried out by the U.S. Atlantic Fleet as well as a special mission to support the Normandy landings on D-Day. In 1945, the USS Satterlee escorted the U.S. Quincy which transported President Roosevelt on the Norfolk-Bermuda portion of his trip to and from the Yalta Conference. After serving in the Atlantic Fleet, the USS Satterlee set sail for the Pacific and commenced air-sea rescue patrol duty between Saipan and Okinawa. This mission was for the rest of the war and the initial months of the occupation. Mr. Jones also served on the USS Tollberg, USS Ellison, and USS Steinaker until his Honorable Discharge in December 1948.
Mr. Jones was employed by Western Electric prior to his Navy enlistment as a cabinet maker that fabricated switch boards. After the war, Mr. Jones worked as a stage hand in Newark after which he served as the lead carpenter at the Paper Mill Play House for many years. Deciding to change careers, he next worked for the United States Postal Service in Summit New Jersey until he retired.
His wit, wisdom and compassion will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Jones is predeceased by his longtime companion and love of his life, Marion Parks (his "Puddin") of Bernardsville.
Mr. Jones is survived by his close friend and son Mark Prusina and his wife Rose, along with Philip's grandchildren Tyler and Jessica.
Mr. Jones is also survived by two sons of a previous marriage, Philip Jones of Toms River New Jersey and Richard Jones and wife Valerie and grandchildren Brian and Maura of Bloomfield New Jersey.
