Obituary of Amelia A Doherty

Amelia Angela Doherty

November 3, 1939 – November 22, 2023

Family matriarch, pasta and coffee lover, and life of the party. Amelia Angela Doherty, age 84 of Bridgewater, NJ peacefully passed onto our Lord on November 22, 2023. She was surrounded by her husband of 61 years of marriage, Robert Doherty, and her loving family members.

Amelia was born November 3, 1939, in Brooklyn, NY to Angelina and John Corvaia. She grew up in Brooklyn in a tight-knit Italian neighborhood of family and friends that she cherished so much. She was always very close with her younger sister Anita along with all her family members. She attended Saint Brendan's High School in Brooklyn. During her high school years, the love of her life, Robert Doherty from Flatbush, NY, won a coin flip to dance with the beautiful Amelia. When Robert won the coin toss, he didn’t know he won the woman of his dreams for the next 67 years together. She later attended the NY School of Interior Design, which was one of her passions, and later formed an interior design business with two of her close friends.

Amelia is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 61 years, Robert Doherty, their three grown children, Kathleen Bassiacos, Robert Doherty and Suzanne Sterling, as well as, her sister Anita Taylor Chambers. Amelia was also the grandmother to six beautiful girls Amanda, Kristina, Emily, Paige, Maeve, and Delia, who were the center of her life. Most recently Amelia became a great-grandmother to yet another beautiful girl, Eleanor. All her granddaughters loved their Nana dearly!

Amelia was a longtime resident of Harding, NJ. She took great pride in raising her three children, making lifelong friends, and always having a mandatory home cooked Sunday meal for her grandchildren. Dinners included pasta and meatballs, wine, and fun in the family pool together. In addition to her passion of life’s work of hosting frequent family gatherings, Amelia’s other great love was the time that she and Bob always shared with their various groups of friends in both New Jersey and Florida. She loved getting a “bite to eat” at various restaurants, listening to live music, shopping, playing penny slots, and playing games such as cards and

Bocce Ball. Time she spent with her family and friends always made her laugh incessantly and gave her so much joy.

Amelia connected with all her friends and family in a way that they knew they were loved. She was known for her warm smile, wisdom, and generous spirit. Our comfort is that we all know she is now sitting peacefully at the Right Hand of the Father, with her loving parents Ann and John, her favorite Aunt Amelia (her namesake) in addition to many others she has adored so much. Her love of life and kind spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her, but life will not be the same without her bright light. God Bless Amelia Doherty.

The visitation is Monday, November 27th 3pm-7pm at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home in Basking Ridge, NJ. The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, November 28th at Christ the King Church at 10:30am in Harding, NJ followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Basking Ridge, NJ.
