Obituary of Rev. Msgr. William J Capik

Msgr. William J Capik, 94, passed away on January, 27, 2024.

 

 

Msgr. William John Capik was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey on January 12, 1930. He attended St. Charles High School Seminary, Catonsville, MD and St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, MD.   He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Trenton on June 4, 1955.   He served at St. Ann Parish, Hampton, NJ and St. Anthony Parish, Hightstown, NJ before serving as Athletic Director of Notre Dame High School, Trenton, NJ, then Principal of Holy Cross High School, Delran, NJ.  He served as Pastor at St. Michael Parish, Trenton, NJ and St. Peter’s Parish, New Brunswick, NJ before becoming Pastor of St. James Parish in Basking Ridge, NJ in 1981, just before the Diocese of Metuchen was created. He retired from active ministry in 2005.   For 18 years, Monsignor served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick, NJ as well as various diocesan roles and on many committees: Vicar for Education, Diocesan Council for Financial Affairs, Vicar for Charities and Social Ministry, and as a mentor to first-time pastors.  In retirement, he regularly assisted parishes by being available for Masses and Confessions, including the Sisters of Mercy at McAuley Hall HealthCare Center, Watchung, NJ. 

 

In addition to his love for serving Jesus and the Church, he was also an avid golfer, reader, and loved spending time with family and friends.

Msgr. William Capik was preceded in death by his parents, John & Anna Capik and his sister in-law, Virginia Capik.

He is survived by his brother, Richard Capik. His niece, Tracy Gregory, her husband, Larry Gregory, and their children: William, Margo, Andrew, & Elaine. His niece, Susan Deming, her husband, Tom Deming, and their children: Courtney, Meg, & Sam.

Visitation will be held on Sunday Feb 4th from 4-6pm at the Church of St. James, 184 South Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, followed by a Rosary service at 6:30pm. A funeral mass will be held that evening at 7:00pm. A second funeral mass will be held on Feb 5th at 11:00 am at the Church of St. James. Burial will be private.
