Obituary of Richard J Nesbitt
Richard Nesbitt, 95, died on March 8 at his home in Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge with his family nearby. He had lived in Short Hills for over 35 years before moving to this retirement community.
Mr. Nesbitt was a native of Nevada, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1940 and was on board the battleship Nevada during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He received a masters degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from MIT. He served 23 years on active duty retiring as a Captain. He was an active member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and following retirement from the Navy, he held various executive positions in the marine industry.
He had served as president of the Short Hills Association, and trustee of the Millburn Free Public Library. He had also been a governor of the Short Hills Club and Trustee of the Community Congregational Church in Short Hills.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Peggy, whom he met in Honolulu in 1941, their three daughters, Martha Moriarty, Elizabeth Moldenhauer, and Mary Reichard; six grandchildren, Emily Moriarty Flynn, Paige Moriarty, Charles Moldenhauer, Brooke Moldenhauer, Kimberley Reichard, Sam Reichard; and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held March 30 at 2 pm at Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church or Fellowship Village Legacy Endowment Fund.
