John W. Utz Jr. (Jay), 81, of Basking Ridge, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Born on October 19, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jay spent nearly his entire life in Basking Ridge, the town he loved and proudly called home. He graduated with the first graduating class of Ridge High School in 1962 and later attended Rider University.

On September 13, 1969, Jay married Nan (Crovelli) Utz. Together they shared 56 years of marriage.

Jay is survived by his wife, Nan; his daughter, Christa Utz Simons and her husband, Justin, of Basking Ridge; his son, Brian Utz of Basking Ridge; his cherished granddaughters, Valentina and Gianna Simons, who lovingly knew him as Pop-Pop; his sisters, Rae Utz Watson of Bedminster, New Jersey, and Sallie Hooker of Ohio; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Rae Foulkrod Utz and John W. Utz Sr.

Jay's work reflected both his talent and his love of automobiles. He opened Jay's Auto Restoration in Millington, where he restored vehicles. He later worked as a building inspector for Bernards Township before becoming a general contractor, a profession he continued until his passing.

For nearly 59 years, Jay proudly served as a volunteer firefighter with Basking Ridge Fire Company No. 1, joining the department in December 1967. The fire company was one of the great passions of his life. He took immense pride in serving alongside generations of firefighters and was deeply committed to protecting the community that had always been his home.

Anyone who knew Jay knew his love for Ford cars and trucks. Whether it was talking about a classic Ford, watching NASCAR on a Sunday afternoon, listening to country music, or working on a project in the garage, he was happiest doing what he loved. He also had a deep appreciation for the history of Basking Ridge and loved sharing stories about the town, its people, and how it had changed over the years. Whether talking with lifelong friends or someone new to town, Jay always had a story to tell.

Jay was a familiar face in Basking Ridge for nearly his entire life. He was a devoted husband, father, and proud Pop-Pop to Valentina and Gianna. He will be missed by his family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the many people who had the opportunity to know him over the years.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920.
