Richard W. DePoortere, 95, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026.

Born June 8, 1931, in Newark, New Jersey, Richard lived a long and fulfilling life marked by faith, service, and an unwavering devotion to his family. A faithful Catholic, he was known for his kind heart, steady presence, and remarkable ability to tinker with just about anything. Whether fixing, building, or simply figuring out how something worked, Richard always enjoyed keeping his hands and mind busy.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served from 1949 to 1952, including assignments with the 412th Test Wing and the 7th Motor Transport Battalion. His military service reflected the sense of honor, discipline, and commitment that remained with him throughout his life.

Above all else, Richard treasured his family. He is survived by his children, Kathleen DePoortere, Patrick DePoortere, and Elizabeth DePoortere; his beloved grandchildren, Maryann (Justin) Erwin, Ruth DePoortere, Amanda DePoortere, Jesse DePoortere, Nicole (Michael) Longo, Kristin (Anthony Salas) DePoortere, Alex DePoortere, and Dana (Trevor) Seagreaves; along with many cherished great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marion DePoortere; his sons, Richard DePoortere Jr., Stephen DePoortere, and Christopher DePoortere; and his cherished granddaughter, Naomi DePoortere.

Richard will be remembered for his deep faith, quiet strength, willingness to lend a helping hand, and the love he shared with his family. His legacy lives on through the generations he helped shape and the countless memories that will continue to be treasured by those who knew and loved him.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home on Thursday, July 30, from 4–6 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. James Church on Friday, July 31, at 11 am. Burial will take place on Monday, August 3, at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery and will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to HeartWorks or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Richard’s memory.

Though he will be deeply missed, Richard’s life was one of service, faith, and love. His memory will remain forever in the hearts of his family and friends.
