Joan McCall Dill Obituary
Joan Dill passed away on April 19, 2026, at the age of 88. A resident of Gladstone, NJ since 1976 and a devoted communicant of St. Brigid’s Church, Joan’s life was defined by her deep commitment to her family, faith, and community.
Born in Gary, Indiana, to James G. and Grace (Sheehan) McCall, Joan was raised in Provo, Utah alongside her six siblings, including her twin brother, John. From an early age, she was grounded in a strong faith and a lifelong desire to help others.
Joan graduated from The College of St. Mary’s of the Wasatch in Salt Lake City with a degree in Chemistry. While in college, she met her future husband, Tom, at a social for servicemen stationed at a nearby Army base. Their relationship began over a game of ping pong and grew through five years of devoted letter writing, until Tom returned to Utah to propose. After their wedding, they drove east to begin their life together, building a marriage that spanned 65 years until Tom’s passing in January 2025.
Joan and Tom built a life centered on love, faith, and laughter. She cherished her role as a wife and mother and will be deeply missed by her daughter Mary Ellen Peters (Joe) of Basking Ridge, her son Steven Dill (Randi) of Gladstone, and her son-in-law John Cook of Hingham, MA.
Joan was a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren: Tommy Peters (Kaitlyn), Grace Gearhart (Craig), Emily Rankowitz (Pete), Caroline Cook, Alison Cook, Aiden Dill, and Shannon Dill. She shared a special bond with each of them and was affectionately known as the keeper of their secrets. She delighted in the arrival of her great-grandchildren—Brendan, Norah, and Cecilia Peters—and eagerly awaited the births of two more in the coming months.
She is also survived by her sister, Kathy Schiff (Michael); her twin brother, John McCall; sisters-in-law Cynthia McCall and Jeannie McCall; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tom; her dear daughter, Barbara Cook; her sister, Denise Keate; and her brothers James G. McCall, Jr., Robert H. McCall, and Lawrence McCall.
Joan was deeply involved in her community, serving on the Peapack-Gladstone First Aid Squad, the Land Use Board, and the Board of Education, as well as supporting many of her children’s activities. At St. Brigid’s Church, she was an active member of the choir and served as a Eucharistic Minister and lector.
After dedicating herself to raising her family, Joan returned to her career as a chemist with the Parke-Davis division of Warner-Lambert, where she worked until her retirement in 2001.
Joan lived a full and generous life, forming lasting friendships wherever she went and offering kindness and support to all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in her memory to the Peapack-Gladstone First Aid Squad or to Joy’s Angels at joysangelshealingcenter.org.
