Gerald M DeFrancisco Obituary

Gerald “Jerry” DeFrancisco, a devoted husband, extraordinary father, mentor, and lifelong servant to others, passed away on March 12, 2026, at the age of 79 surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Jerry was, in every sense, larger than life. Standing 6’6”, he was physically imposing, but it was his humor, intellect, kindness, and love of dessert that truly made him unforgettable. He was many things to many people—a leader, a teacher, a trusted advisor, a humanitarian—but the role he cherished most was that of husband and father. By his own words, his family was his “finest work.”

Born and raised in Albany, New York, Jerry was deeply proud of his roots and of his alma mater, Siena College, where he graduated in 1968. Siena was more than a school to him—it was a lifelong home. He cherished friendships there that spanned more than six decades and returned later in life to give back as a Distinguished Civic Leader in Residence, mentoring students with the same care and attentiveness he brought to parenting. He believed leadership required both competence and compassion—“managing with both heart and head”—a philosophy he lived by every day.

Jerry’s love of learning never waned. A historian at heart, he traveled extensively—visiting 47 states and over 45 countries—always immersing himself in the stories of the places he explored. He had a particular passion for military history and the Civil War. He delighted in bringing history to life for those around him, and tried to make it fun for his wife and daughters, who did not always share the same level of enthusiasm.

As a father, Jerry was exceptional. He was deeply present in his daughters’ lives, not just as a parent, but as a coach, confidant, and constant supporter. Some of his fondest memories were spent coaching his daughters’ basketball teams, where he relished the opportunity to connect not only with his girls but with their friends as well. He was a listener—a quality he worked at intentionally—and believed that being heard was one of the greatest gifts a parent could offer. He is remembered more so for his storytelling ability. When he told a story it was often threaded with a piece of wisdom but would always make you laugh. His empathy, patience, and quiet wisdom shaped his daughters into the women they are today.

Jerry’s professional life was distinguished and far-reaching. He served his country as a U.S. Army Lieutenant before embarking on a 30-year career with AT&T, where he held numerous executive leadership roles, including Executive Vice President of Broadband and Internet Services and President and CEO of AT&T Alascom. During his time in Alaska, he led transformative infrastructure projects connecting remote Native villages—an experience he considered among the most meaningful of his career. His time there was marked by deep respect for local cultures, enduring friendships, and even an honorary Eskimo name meaning “The giant who floats on the air.”

Following his corporate career, Jerry led two global consulting firms before answering a call to humanitarian service as President of Humanitarian Services for the American Red Cross. In that role, he oversaw operations across more than 1,500 locations worldwide, guiding major organizational transformation and providing leadership during disaster recovery efforts, including Hurricane Sandy. He made a historic visit to Vietnam as the first senior Red Cross official to do so, bringing home ideas and inspiration that strengthened the organization’s mission.

Jerry was also a dedicated educator, serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Alaska, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Seton Hall University, and Siena College. He held a B.A. in History from Siena College, an Executive MBA from Pace University, and a Doctorate in Professional Studies from Pace University. In recognition of his lifetime of leadership, service, and humanitarian ideals, Siena College awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

Despite these accomplishments, Jerry never measured success by titles or accolades. Family was everything. He was a loving husband, a proud father, and a joyful grandfather. He carried the stories of his Sicilian heritage with pride, honoring the generations who came before him and passing those stories on.

Jerry leaves behind a legacy of integrity, kindness, intellectual curiosity, and love. He taught those around him how to listen deeply, lead thoughtfully, and care fiercely. Though his physical presence is gone, his influence remains—in his family, in his students, in the countless lives he touched through his work, and in the many friends who were fortunate enough to walk alongside him for decades.

He was, simply, a great man—and an even greater father.

Jerry faced his final year with the same determination and sense of humor that defined his life—battling lymphoma through chemotherapy and immunotherapy with remarkable strength and optimism. When treatment was successful and the future seemed hopeful, an unexpected brain tumor changed the course of his journey. After two months of aggressive treatment, his body could no longer carry the fight. He did not want to leave this world; he wanted more time—to travel, to teach, and most of all, to remain an active presence in the lives of his three beloved grandchildren.

A special thank you to the incredible medical team and staff on the oncology floor of Morristown Medical Center and the rehabilitation center at Fellowship Village. The quality of care, attention, kindness and optimism he was met with every day will be remembered.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Regina; daughters, Geri and Martha; sons-in-law, Teddy and Kip; grandchildren, Cayden, April and Sophie; brothers Joe and Mark; grandpups, Archer and Ella, and 23 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Mario.
