Franklin D Wald Obituary

Frank Wald, MD, passed away at the age of 92 on February 7, 2026. Frank was an adoring and devoted husband to his wife Maggie. He is survived by Maggie and his children Jon and his partner Madie, Lise and her husband Libor, Alison, Su and her husband Tom, Lisa and her husband Kenny; his grandchildren Kathryn, Bridgit, Rose, Abby and August, great-grandchildren Brayden and Brielle, and close family friends. Frank was pre-deceased by his oldest son Mike. Frank and Maggie were devoted dog parents.

Frank grew up in Borough Park, Brooklyn, New York along with his three siblings, all of whom he remained close to throughout their lives. He attended Columbia University as an undergraduate. While at Columbia, he was on the university fencing team and greatly enjoyed both the sport and the camaraderie with his teammates. He went on to attend New York University School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Frank served as a Navy medical officer at Bremerton Naval Hospital in Bremerton, Washington in his early years as a physician. He became a radiologist and spent the majority of his practicing years at John F. Kennedy Hospital (Edison Radiology) in Edison, New Jersey. He loved his work, delighted in interacting with patients, and was enamored with the specialty of medical imaging. He eagerly embraced new technologies, both professionally and personally. Once he formally retired, he continued to work as a per diem radiologist, and maintained a very strong interest in his chosen field into his later years.

He was an avid photographer and spent many hours in his home darkroom developing photos he had taken. There was no shortage of photographs of Maggie, the children, family events, trips, beloved pets, and places that he visited and traveled to. Frank greatly enjoyed working in his basement woodworking shop as one of his many hobbies. He had a gift for fixing things and was extremely handy. In his younger years he was a runner and a skier. He obtained his pilot license to fly small aircraft - aviation was a passion and interest that he shared with his brother Arnold. In his later years he greatly enjoyed walking his and Maggie’s dogs daily, making many new friends through this activity.

Frank delighted in telling jokes and held onto his quick wit and affinity for seeing the lighter side of things throughout his life. He is and will be deeply missed.
