It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janet (Chapman) Hartop on Sunday, February 15th at the age of 99. She died at her home surrounded by family.
A native of Massachusetts, Janet was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where she met her future husband, William. They started their life together in Chicago where they started their family, briefly residing in Ohio, and ultimately settling in Bernardsville, New Jersey in 1967. After the passing of her husband, Bill, in 2000, she lived independently in the family home until she was 92 years old. She then moved to Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains, New Jersey.
Janet was a woman of many talents. An accomplished seamstress, quilter, and needleworker, she created imaginative Halloween costumes and treasured heirloom pieces for her family. She was an adventurous cook who embraced French cuisine with enthusiasm. She also was known for her delicious pies.
Janet was competitive. She was on a bowling team for many years and played a mean game of pool, maintaining her competitive edge well into her late eighties—much to the dismay of her sons-in-law. She delighted in badminton and bocce with her grandchildren and was a shrewd and talented card player. She completed the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink every day.
The lakes region of New Hampshire held a cherished place in Janet's heart. Her childhood summers at Lake Sunapee evolved into decades of treasured family gatherings at Lake Winnipesaukee, creating memories that spanned generations.
Janet is survived by her three daughters: Karen Bush, Laura Kalnajs (Ansis), and Lisa Grazia (Kyle), seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Cherlyn, Janet's devoted caregiver of six years, whose compassionate care and affection was much appreciated by the family.
