Barbara E Bridge Obituary

Barbara Emilia (Rapp) Bridge, born April 1, 1933, in Staten Island, New York, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 2, 2026. She was the daughter of Aida I. Rapp (Arrigoni) and Emil B. Rapp, a prominent Staten Island attorney who served as Tax Commissioner for the Borough of Staten Island under Mayor Abraham Beame.

Barbara was a 1950 graduate of Port Richmond High School. She studied at Wagner College and worked in New York City in a secretarial capacity before marrying her husband, James A. Bridge Jr., in 1955.

Barbara was the devoted mother of five children: James A. Bridge III (Milwaukee, Wisconsin); Gregg E. Bridge (Diane) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin); Marc T. Bridge (Kathy) (Boston, Massachusetts); Beth A. Bridge (Bedminster New Jersey); and Barbara A. Bridge (James) (Fredericksburg, Virginia).

She is also survived by her sister, Sandra (Rapp) Carlock (Warren, New Jersey), and her beloved grandchildren: Jacob Bridge-Maier (Marissa), Angela Peixoto (Christopher), Phillip Bridge, Jacqueline Bridge, Erica Bridge, Andrew (Augustina)Bridge, Rachel Bridge, Leah Bridge, Alexander Shidlovsky, Nicholas Shidlovsky (Yanci), and Sophia Shidlovsky. Barbara was also a proud grandmother to several step-grandchildren, including Samantha Serrano, Ricky Serrano, Jeremiah Shidlovsky and Jonathon Shidlovsky. She was deeply proud to be a great-grandmother to Mathias Bridge, Maya Bridge, Colson Peixoto, Evelyn Peixoto, Nadia Shidlovsky, and Lucas Shidlovsky.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Captain James A. Bridge Jr. (1983), her half-sister, Wanda Romano (2019) and her parents.

After marrying James Bridge, also of Staten Island, Barbara began a life defined by service, resilience, and devotion to family. As James left the Merchant Marine to pursue a career in the United States Navy, where he served as an engineering officer, Barbara embraced the demanding role of what she proudly became—the quintessential Navy wife. Over the next 30 years, she raised their five children—often on her own—while serving as the unquestioned Commander-in-Chief of the family.

Navy life took Barbara far from her Staten Island roots, with residences in Rhode Island, New York, California, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), and even Bangkok, Thailand. During James’s shipboard assignments aboard the USS Eaton (DDE-510) and the USS Harry E. Yarnell (DLG-17), and while he served in Da Nang, Vietnam during the Vietnam War, Barbara provided unwavering stability, safety, and guidance for their children.

A second generation American of Italian descent, Barbara’s ancestral roots are traced to Santo Stefano d’Aveto in Liguria, Italy through her grandmother Angela (Cella) Rossi, and to Montefalcione, Campania, Italy, through her grandfather Michael L. Rapp. Raised in a home steeped in a rich culinary tradition, Barbara learned the art of cooking from her mother and grandmother and carried that passion throughout her life.

Barbara’s time in Bangkok, Thailand (1967–1968) when James was assigned the task of improving the Thai Navy as the Vietnam War waged nearby, proved to be transformative. Immersed in the region’s culture and cuisine, Barbara emerged as an even more gifted and adventurous cook, mastering Thai, Chinese, and Indian cuisine.  Central to her being, she passed that love of food, culture, and hospitality to each of her children.

While James served in Vietnam from 1969–1970, earning the Bronze Star for his service while under recurring missile attacks, Barbara moved the family to her parents’ summer cottage in Cranberry Lake, New Jersey. She winterized the home and took care of the family, meeting the challenge and the worry of her husband being in a war zone with determination and quiet strength in a community where there were few year-round residents.

From 1970 to 1975, while James served as Assistant Shipyard Supervisor and later Supervisor at the Philadelphia Naval Yard, Barbara became a renowned hostess, entertaining naval officers from around the world whose ships were being repaired and overhauled there. Her culinary skill and cultural grace made her an invaluable adjunct to her husband’s career, and her dinners and cocktail parties were highly sought after.

James’s naval career concluded with service on the prestigious INSERV Board, where he traveled around the world alongside Admiral John Bulkeley of World War 2 fame, conducting inspections of naval installations and sea trials aboard nuclear aircraft carriers, including the USS Nimitz. Once again, as she did throughout their lives together, Barbara remained the family’s anchor, guiding their children through adolescence and early adulthood from their home in Alexandria, Virginia.

Barbara and James retired to Stirling, New Jersey, in 1977. After James’s untimely death in 1983, Barbara moved forward with characteristic independence, working at Bell Labs and Braunschweiger Jewelers in Morristown, New Jersey. She was especially proud of her service on a Federal Grand Jury in Newark, New Jersey, often recounting—with enthusiasm—her role in helping bring organized crime figures to justice.

In 2006, Barbara became a resident of Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, where she spent nearly two decades living independently. Known for her spirited candor, warmth, and generosity, she shared food, baked goods, conversation, and kindness freely with residents and staff alike.

Barbara is now reunited with all those she loved who went before her.  While here, she loved life and lived it with passion.  She had an infectious sense of humor and laughter was a tonic she applied liberally!  She will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives she touched through her strength, generosity, her sense of humor and her unwavering devotion to family.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 28, 2026, at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Barbara’s lifelong love of and concern for children, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Smiletrain at https://suppport.Smiletrain.org or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital www.stjude.org
