Louis K Meany Obituary

Louis Kevin Meany, 88, of Bernardsville, NJ, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 15, 2025. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, he cherished his roots and faith and carried them with him throughout a life defined by service, family, and community.

Lou was born on February 14, 1937. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son,  brother, and a cherished member of the community. Lou is survived by his loving bride, Grace R. Meany, his seven good children Kevin Meany, Monica (Thomas) Heyl, Michele (Gregory Sr.) Lobo, Pamela (Matthew) Hampton, Andrew (Christine) Meany, David (Kristen) Meany, and Christine (Matthew) Palumbo. “Pop Pop” was a doting grandfather to his thirteen grandchildren, Grace, Gregory Jr., Patrick, and Brendan Lobo; Brian and Elizabeth Heyl; Catherine and Michael Meany; Megan, John, and James Meany; and Matthew and Nathaniel Palumbo.  He is also survived by his siblings Thomas (Patricia) Meany, Elizabeth Meany Baker, John (Anne) Meany, and his ample number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents John James Meany and Monica LaCombe Meany, his brother Paul Meany, and his sister Ann Meany Scott.

Known for his patriotism and keen fashion sense, “Sweet Lou” was a proud graduate of St. John’s University and an enthusiastic Redmen basketball fan.   He went on to serve his country as a LT. JG in the US Navy during the blockade of Cuba in 1962.  After his service, he built a long, distinguished investment banking career on Wall Street, working with several firms, including as a partner at Lehman Brothers.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, he invested deeply in his family, his faith, and his community. He and Grace settled and raised their family in Short Hills, NJ for 30 years.  Throughout that time, he was a stalwart coach and advocate of youth football and founded the Millburn High School hockey team.  He was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and a regular lector at St. Rose of Lima in Short Hills.  A lifelong lover of all NY sports teams, sailing, and golfing, he found joy in summers at Meantyme in Cooperstown, NY, surrounded by family and friends.

He shared more than 70 years of love and partnership with his wife, a bond that stood at the center of his life and his faith. His legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives he touched with his kindness, dedication, and generous spirit.

A viewing will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, September 19th, at Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home in Basking Ridge, NJ.  A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 am on Saturday, September 20th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville, NJ.
