Thomas W. Prohigh passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, with his wife of 57 years, Laura, by his side. He was a 15 year survivor of pancreatic cancer and was bravely battling lung cancer at the time of his passing.
Tom enjoyed a 39 year career in the telecommunications industry, holding various positions with New Jersey Bell/Verizon. However, his true passion was hands-on work. Whether building a deck, fixing the unfixable, or bringing to life something only his imagination could envision, Tom was rarely seen without a sketchpad, a saw, or a hammer in hand.
When he wasn’t working on a project, Tom loved spending time with his family and many friends visiting wineries, sharing laughs, and joking around. He had a wonderful sense of humor and found joy in making others laugh.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Laura; his daughter, Karen; son-in-law, Steven; and four granddaughters—Emily, Melissa, Catherine, and Caragh—who all lovingly called him “Pop Pop.” He is also survived by his brother, Gerald; sister-in-law, Karen; two great-grandchildren, Roan and Gabe; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom he adored. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas D. Prohigh, whom he forever loved and deeply missed.
Visitation will be held at Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 S. Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.
Funeral Mass to be held at St. James Church, 184 S. Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 11am. Interment will take place following mass at Holy Cross Cemetery, 145 Mt. Airy Rd, Basking Ridge, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sierra Club, an organization Tom supported for many decades, or to Consumer Reports, whose mission and magazine he was passionate about.
