Virginia C. Hammett, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a long illness on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at home in Stirling, NJ. She was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ. She graduated from Dickenson High School and what was then Jersey City State College. She worked as a teacher in the Jersey City public schools as well as on the library staff of the University of Chicago. Later in life, she worked alongside her late husband, John E. Hammett Jr. at Hart Buick in Clifton, NJ. While she lived in Clifton, she was an active member of Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, serving the church through a variety of volunteer efforts.
Ginny was predeceased by her husband, her parents, Jean Caroline (Snyder) and Nunzio Thomas Castrovinci, her sister, Marilynn Muldoon, her niece Maeve Mockus, and her infant daughter, Lylas Jean Hammett. Survivors include her loving children, Dr. John E. Hammett III and his wife Roxanna E. Hammett, Esq., Ian T. Hammett and his wife Janis L. Hammett, Dr. Heather L. Hammett and her husband Sindre Sandvik, granddaughters, Melissa Dukin and husband Brent Dukin, Alexa Cermignano and husband Robert Cermignano, grandsons Jason Hammett, Zachary Hammett, and Ethan Hammett, great-granddaughters Georgianna Cermignano and Ella Dukin, nieces Lynnie Donahue and Virginia Galfo, and nephew, Douglas A. Hammett Jr.
Visitation and a memorial service will be Saturday, October 4, 2025 at the Galloway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, NJ, with visitation from 11 AM until 12:30 PM when a prayer service will be held. A private interment with the family will follow in Knowlton Township, NJ.
