Chester Barry Schlesinger (“Barry”) was born on July 30, 1930 in Newark, NJ to Bertha (Illion) and Leonard Schlesinger. Barry played high school football and graduated from Weequahic High School. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Japan and other locations during the Korean War. After his military service, he married Rona Wiener, and moved to Union, NJ, where he lived for 24 years. Barry and Rona had two children, their daughter, Pamela, and their son, Glenn. While residing in Union, Barry was an avid baseball and football coach. Barry’s marriage with Rona ended in divorce in 1985. Shortly after that, Barry met Sally Nigro and they had a lasting relationship for close to 37 years, which ended with Sally’s passing in March 2021. Barry worked in the vending machine business for the vast majority of his adult life, which was a career he thoroughly enjoyed, and at some point, he had served on the Essex County ABC Board in connection with the vending business. Barry loved sports and enjoyed watching baseball and football games on television. Barry loved and cherished his grandchildren. Barry passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Madison, NJ at the age of 94. He is survived by his daughter, Pamela (Robert Kwartler), his son Glenn (Staci Sturrock), stepson John Nigro, stepson James Nigro (Vivienne Nigro), and the following grandchildren: Joanna Kwartler (David Lieberson), Daniel Kwartler (Shaylin Schundler), Kathryn Schlesinger, Victoria Kwartler, Anthony Nigro, Gregory Nigro (Arianna Nigro), Jade Nigro, Nicholas Nigro, Vincent Nigro, and two great grandsons, Owen Lieberson and Jordan Nigro. Barry also leaves behind many wonderful friends, including those he came to know and cherish at the Deli King in Clark, Arbor Terrace in Morris Plains, and Pine Acres in Madison.
