Obituary of Robert Gaynor

Chester, NJ – Robert Peter Gaynor, 81, passed away peacefully on April 3rd, 2025 at Morristown Medical Center.

Robert (Bob) was a retired firefighter, devoted husband, and father of three. Born on August 19th, 1943 in Newark, NJ, he was the eldest child of Edward and Elizabeth Gaynor. He attended West Side High School, graduating in 1962.

After high school, Robert joined the Newark Fire Department, serving multiple tours at busy stations across the city, attaining the rank of Battalion Chief. Robert took immense pride in his work, not just because of the service he provided, but because of the deep bonds he formed with his fellow firefighters. Through countless calls, long nights, and dangerous rescues, they became more than just colleagues; they became lifelong friends who had each other’s backs, no matter what. In 1999, Robert retired from the fire department after a 30-year career. In retirement, he established a successful business as the Mendham Handyman, performing repairs and property maintenance while supporting and connecting with his local community.

In 1967, Robert married Kathryn Ann Corbo, and together they raised three children in Union before moving to Mendham in 1992. They remained happily married for 44 years until Kathryn’s passing in 2011.

Robert had a zest for life that was reflected in his hobbies and interests. He loved classic cars, rock and roll music, and traveling to new places with family. His presence could fill a room, and he never met a person he couldn’t engage with on a meaningful level. Robert’s generosity and warmth touched everyone who knew him, and he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter and love.

Robert is survived by his sisters, Janet and Patricia, his children, Natalie, Jeff, and Rachel, and four grandchildren: Matthew, Nicholas, Henry and Stella. He will be will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing his path.

A celebration of Robert’s life will be held from 10am-1pm on Saturday, April 12th at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center (310 South Street, 4th floor Morristown, NJ 07960).
