Obituary of Glenn E Taylor

Glenn Elmer Taylor

On Friday, March 14, 2025, Glenn Elmer Taylor went ahead of us to be with our Father. He was a devoted husband, father, grandad, brother and dedicated member of Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church for over 35 years. He will be deeply missed, and we all look forward to the day we see him again.

Glenn was born on April 17, 1936, in Baytown, Texas.  He never forgot his humble beginnings, recalling how he owned only one pair of overalls and went barefoot to school until the 5th grade. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas he attended the local community college, before moving on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.  After graduation in 1958,  Glenn remained an active supporter of his alma mater throughout his life, particularly the UT College of Engineering, and was a passionate follower of UT sports.

He started his career with the Diamond Alkali Corporation, living in Mexico and Colombia where he became fluent in Spanish.

After returning to Houston, he met and married the love of his life, Diane, on April 15, 1972, at the First Methodist church in Houston, TX. Over the years, Glenn and Diane lived in Texas, Delaware, New Jersey and Georgia before settling down in Basking Ridge, New Jersey in 1988.

Glenn had a remarkable thirty-eight-year career in chemical engineering, highlighted by serving as Vice President and General Manager of the Pigments Division of Engelhard Corporation. He later became VP of joint ventures and manufacturing services.  After retiring from Engelhard in 1996, Glenn became the Executive Director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).  There, he led the implementation of a new strategic plan, marking the first major governance change in 30 years. Glenn even spent one semester as a visiting professor at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

His deep commitment to service and community led him to become actively involved in the development and growth of the Hearts for Honduras School, with Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church.  He made over 20 trips to Honduras, where he served as a translator and was also  instrumental in setting up the Hearts for Honduras Foundation. His last trip was in 2017 at the age of 81. Since then, Glenn and Diane have dedicated their service to Malawi Visions, an organization that helps build libraries and learning centers, support communities through solar and irrigation development, and provide essential resources to children who would otherwise have little hope for a better future. Glenn was an active member of the Ministry of Hope Board of Directors, through which Malawi Visions partners in Malawi with other member churches in the U.S.

Glenn also served on the UT Cockrell Engineering School’s Engineering Advisory Board and the AIChE Board of Trustees. He was the recipient of numerous awards throughout his life, including the AIChE Service to Society Award and the Millicent Fenwick Volunteer Service Award presented by the YMCA. In 2005, he was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Chemical Engineers by the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas.

Glenn was an avid gardener like his dad and had a vegetable garden in every home he and Diane owned. On a summer day he could often be found tending to his tomatoes, corn, green beans, butternut squash and sharing his crops with anyone who would take them off his hands. Glenn’s life was one of service, leadership, and deep faith. He will be remembered for his unwavering generosity, commitment to helping others, and his profound impact on the lives of those he encountered.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 plus years, Diane, children Jerry (Karyn), Jennifer (Mark), four grandchildren, Ben, Carson, Will, and Clara, whom he said he loved “more than they will ever know.” He is also survived by brother Ken (Sarah Bob), sister Roberta, niece Kerry and nephews Robert, Steven, Jason and Casey. He is predeceased by his parents Winnie and Elmer and his nephew Lacy.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 from 4:00 - 6:00pm at Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 S. Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, 11:00am at Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church, 45 Church St, Liberty Corner, NJ 07938. Burial will follow at Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church Cemetery. For further information, or to leave an online condolence message please visit www.gcfuneralhome.com

“The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God's heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.”
