Mary Curran

Obituary of Mary Lou Curran

It is with sadness we write about Mary Lou Curran's death. She was an independent, strong, caring, intelligent woman who loved gardening, birds, reading, and traveling. On May 29, 1922, Mary Lou was born in New York City, living most of her childhood in Mountain Lakes, NJ where she graduated high school. After high school, she attended the University of Michigan. Mary Lou enlisted as a Wave in the Navy right after graduation from U of M. She served for three years during World War II and was stationed in Washington D.C.. She worked at a coding machine to receive and send messages for the Allies. After the Waves, Mary Lou worked in New York City for her entire career, first for Harriman Ripley & Co Incorporated, then latter for Merrill Lynch. After retiring from Merrill Lynch she started a second career - volunteering at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and pursuing her love of gardening and bird watching. She was an incredibly dedicated daughter who gave much of her adult life to be the sole caretaker of a Mother with a chronic illness. While Mary Lou's illnesses hid a wonderful person at times in her last years, we remember and celebrate the person we loved and admired - a woman of quiet ways, fun loving manner, subtle humor, and caring heart . We love you Aunt Mary Lou.
