AllersOptometrist and Purple Heart recipient On March 12, 2010, Dr. George Andrew Allers, 84, of Basking Ridge, NJ died after a courageous fight against cancer. A New Jersey native, Dr. Allers was born on October, 28, 1925, in Union City, and grew up in Bloomfield. In 1943, George was selected to join the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program (ASTRP) at Princeton University. His schooling was cut short, when he was sent to Europe to fight in WWII, serving in the 397th Infantry, and 100th Infantry divisions. George fought on the front lines in France where he was severely wounded, awarded a Purple Heart, and spent two years recovering in military hospitals abroad and in the U.S. After returning from the service, he attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and grauated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. For 54 years, George practiced Optometry, with private practices in Livingston and Basking Ridge, where in 1973 he opened an office at 93 South Finley Avenue. Dr. Allers was a lifetime member of the American, New Jersey, and Tri-County Optometric Associations; former member of the Bernardsville Rotary; and past president of the Livingston Lions Club. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Keith Allers; loving brother of Carol Aluise, Coral Springs, Fla; devoted father to Paul Allers of Danville, VA, and Pamela Graham and her husband Peter of Union City, NJ; and cherished grandfather to Sharon Bingert and Michael Allers. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great grandchild, Gavin. Relatives and friends are invited to visit the Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home 101 South Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ on Saturday, March 27, at 11am-12pm, followed by a grave side memorial with military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery Basking Ridge, NJ at 12:15pm.
